New P8P67 Sandy Bridge Build - Problems!

Thread Starter
I have just finished assembling my new build, as follows:
  • ASUS P8P67 PRO
    Intel 2500k
    WD Caviar Black 640GB
    XFX Radeon 6950 2GB
    HAF X
    8GB g.skill 1.5V ram
    Corsair Pro 850W

To start off, I had problems booting up the computer, as it failed POST and would not display anything. After some troubleshooting I found that the RAM was the problems. More investigations showed that it wasn't seated properly and needed about one metric ton of force to fully sit in. I had to us the memOK button several times.

After getting the RAM fixed, I had problems with installing windows, as it would boot and say BOOTMGR not found. I managed to get around this with many trials, all whilst my mouse and keyboard would randomly not function anymore, and the PC would freeze during windows install.

After more attempts, I managed to get windows 7 64-bit installed, and then proceeded to install as many drivers for the MOBO and the GPU as possible. However, I am still experiencing two problems:

1 - The PC randomly restarts for no reason. (Restarts only when on desktop/any other windows thing, not in BIOS)

2 - My mouse and keyboard periodically stop responding, forcing me to restart.

I had thought that it might be that my CPU was overheating since I am using the stock heatsink (My noctua is the only part that is still shipping), but in the BIOS my CPU temps read 59 degrees celsius idle, still pretty high I guess. There is thermal paste, and I believe that everything is well installed.

There are no LEDs that light up on the MOBO. Everything sounds good, no weird stuff. A quick run through the case with my hand tells me everything is running cool. I'll be back after work to make sure the heatsink is on properly.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Am I being too cautious by thinking that it is running a bit too hot for idle? 60 degrees celsius seems high to me.

That is really hot for idle. Make sure you installed the heatsink correctly. I've had problems with the stupid pins on it before. I barely hit 60C at full load.

That is high, im running a stock cooler right now and getting 40c which is still high.
also if mouse and keyboard cutting out you might have missed some chipset drivers?

Yay! I updated BIOS and installed the chipset drivers and it worked. Now all I have to do is look into the CPU heating problem, probably an easy fix. Thanks for the help!

Spoke too early. There is still one minor problem: Every time I boot up the PC I have to choose what mode to start in (Normally, Safe mode, etc...) as the computer thinks something went wrong. Any ideas? This is after having installed all the drivers too.

Shut everything down completely. Unplug from power. Then clear CMOS. There should be a jumper somewhere (I think its at the bottom center?) and you move it from the left 2 pins to the right 2 pins for 10 seconds, then move it back. Reboot and see what happens. Easy stuff first.
