Regarding the semi modular concept, whats wrong with 8 pin and 24 pin wired in anyway? You cant use a pc without those two cables anyway.
Certtainly nothing inherently wrong with hard wired cables of any kind but the idea is that you can swap out the actual PSU itself without having to reroute all the 24 pin and 8 pin leads, since you can just unplug and replug them into the new unit. How often this facility is actually used is another matter but that's the reason.
I suppose it also makes it easy to take the PSU block out and give it a blast from an air compressor to get the dust out if you feel the need.
Or sending in an ATI X700 GPU and getting an X800 back
But yeah, you got lucky. Do they even make the HX anymore, they're not on Corsairs website. And also, the reason I want my next PSU to be fully modular is, sleeving.
Keep it, there's no point in returning it; as it'd be more hassle than it's worth.
The HX850 has better voltage regulation on the 3.3v & 5v rails; but it's not going to matter a whole lot for you. You're better off just holding onto your unit and celebrating the fact that you got a unit that does perform well and looks great doing it.
