Hey everyone,

I've already for a long time a big problem with playing GTA IV on my PC. In about approxmily a hour it's just stops (sometimes shorter, sometimes longer) the screen 'freezes' and i get the following screen to see: GTA IV has stopped working. Witht he following explenation:

Description:
Critical runtime problem

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPLICATION CRASH
System RAM: -1083846656
Available RAM: 726732800
Number of CPUs: 8
Video Card Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Video Card Description: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Video Card Driver Version: 7.15.0010.0170
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1043

My pc:

Sapphire Radeon H4870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E (PN 288-20E85-130SA) (SKU# 11133-04-20R)
Intel I7 920
Asus p6t deluxe
Windows Vista

I did found this link: ttp://www.whalliance.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118448 but it says that the sollution that is given ONLY works for the HD4870 512MB and not the 1gb version. And by the way i don't really get what i have to do...

I've read a couple of possible sollutions on English boards around the internet and some say that the sollution is to 'flash the bios?'. Well i've build this PC with my dad when I was around 15 and I don't really know much about how things work inside the pc... So i've got a couple of problems: is it safe? does it solve my proble? how do I do it?

Put this memrestrict into commandline:
-memrestrict 1059061760

Update to the 7th patch and use 10.10e drivers.
Also, keep everything as is but reduce detail and draw distance to 35.
Problem should go away.

Hey thanks for replying!

Ehm memristrict in the commandline, first of all: how do you get there? I tried to do it in Command Prompt (that's what i think you meant?) but i get this message: 'memristrict' is not recognized as an internal or an externenal command, operable program or batch file.

7th patch is already downloaded (rockstar games social club did that for me when i logged in)

10.10e drivers, i am looking for them now

Thanks for your help, only how do you put that restricting thing in the commandline?

Off: I always thought that this PC setup could handle much more graphics... it's actually quite restricted though... I bought this videocard because it's crossfire compatible, perhaps that helps? And i'm using 4GB of ram but I only use 3GB of that because of my 32bit system (so I heard)

Get 64 bit OS, GTA will gobble up all the RAM you have, VRAM also uses up addressing space so technically you have about 2.2GB left to be used by the OS and GTA 4.
To put commandlines, go to the directory where GTA 4 is installed with it executable, right click and make a new text document. Name the document "commandline" and in the text document paste "-memrestrict 1059061760" without quotes for both.

Just keep in mind, when you install the 7th patch, it will suddenly seem you got more MB in you're graphical options menu, its not true, keep the game at 35 draw and detail distance with all other things at high to avoid massive texture popins and other transparency issues.

Unless you get 2GB card, you cant max the game out, don't use crossfire.

Allright, i did what you said:

I made with notepad a file named 'commandline.txt' just with the text: -memrestrict 1059061760

I've downloaded the latest ATI display and catalyst driver:

Catalyst Software Suite (32 bit) English Only51.3 MB10.1212/13/2010
Description:
Package Includes:
Display Driver
ATI Integrated Driver
Catalyst Control Center
(English Language Only)
For the 32 bit version of Windows Vista and Windows 7

I couldn't find 10.10E?

And that 7th patch is autimaticlly installed...

I hope it will work, i've only got one last question: what's the best performing OS for my setup?

Alright, well just noticed 10.10e is windows 7 only driver. Id say get windows 7 x64 home premium.
Make sure the file name is exactly "commandline"
Pretty much id suggest get 7 x64, home premium or professional, whatever floats your boat.

Ok thanks, maybe i can get hold of that OS in a while i hope..

I just tested GTA IV with the new settings and it seems that some things have gotten worse, graphics are really bad and it's lagging as hell there also a thin white line around the screen...?

Did you reduce draw distance to under 35 as mentioned too?
