Going for Raid0 with Primary SSD need advise

Thread Starter
I have my RealSSD Crucial C300 128GB coming in on Monday. This is my first experience with SSD and I want to know what are some of the things that I should be doing to properly install the SSD? I will be reformatting Windows and making the SSD my primary boot device for Windows 7. So a checklist would be nice so that I get the best experience out of my new SSD.

Also here is something that I am curious about. I have a 2nd 640GB version of my current WD coming in as well. I would like to use them as storage and some program that don't require the SSD speed. I was planning on putting them in raid0 to get even better speeds out of the WD's. What do I need to do in order to set up the raid0 and still be able to have the SSD as my primary boot drive? Never done this before so advise would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone? I have a feeling that if I go raid0 with my storage I will lose some performance, is that true?

no need for raid 0 for storage really

Well that really doesn't answer my question lol. I understand that I really don't need raid0 for my storage but at the same time I would like to have it. I understand the risk of losing all data if the raid fails etc etc but I also have programs like steam and such on that raid array so it would be nice to get faster load speeds without having to clog up that new SSD with pointless steam game files.

So here is what I am thinking.
1. Go into bios set my drive to raid (with everything unplugged besides the ssd)
2. Load windows onto the ssd.
3. Install drivers etc, firmware.
4. Go back into my raid array and create the actual raid 0 with the 2 WD drives.
5. ????
6. Profit

Would that work or am i missing something? Basically what I want to know is. If I install raid0 on my WD's will I lose performance with my C300 SSD?

Anyone, before this beast gets here tomorrow?

numbers 1-3 seem correct. however, if you plan on putting your two 640 drives in raid. ALL data will be lost. now, as long as you are aware of this, having a backup of important files is necessary before you raid your drives. the ssd should function well as a boot/program drive. I would just use the other drives as storage. just my $0.02

Thanks so much for you input. Yes, I understand that with putting my drives into raid I will lose all data (I will be backing up that data onto my laptop first). The reason why I would like to make them into a raid0 is because I will have a lot of games installed onto the WD's because 128GB just isn't enough for all I got and I don't want to fill my SSD with pointless crap I don't need to have. So I guess the question is will I lose performance with my SSD if I have the WD set up as raid 0 or will I see better performance if I keep the WD normal and my drive as "AHCI". A clear answer would be nice!

So, I read this thread, and I felt like I was reading the same post 12x

OP: can i?
Poster: you shouldnt
OP: can i?

ETC

jeez, the man didnt ask if he should, he asked how.

I'm sorry I don't know the appropriate answer.

Altho I'm almost 1000% positive its possible but It's been years since I set up anything RAID I do not remember how to go about doing it.

but hopefully someone will chime in shortly with an answer and not another opinion

Hey thanks man! Appreciate it haha. I know that there is a way to do it, and I am pretty confident that I know how I just want to know if I would lose performance by doing so? That's really the only question that I have left. In theory I know how to set it up etc, I just don't want my SSD to perform below it's potential if that makes sense.

Hello mate

If you run the WD drives in Raid0, you will loose Trim!

But as the C300 has a very good "garbage collection", you should be OK

I say go for it
