Try overclocking the memory in heaven bench, it makes a fair bit of difference. It doesn't make too much difference in some benchies, but I imagine some games out there may take advantage of it, or will in the future.
Cooling makes the biggest difference in the clocks, for 1000 core on water I was using ~ 1.19V, at the same voltage at -80° I finished heaven 2.1 at 1160/2300.

Yes i agree that core increase rsults in more performance but that doesn't mean ocing the memory does squat. Think of it this way. the core OC means that it can do more an one time. If you OC the memory it should open up bottleneck, if any, from the memory to the core.

Probably true on a 580, which already has a plethora of memory bandwidth. However, the more you OC the core, the more valuable a memory OC will become, as you affect the 'balance of power' in the card.

I'd be willing to bet that 975/2200 is faster on most tests than 1000/2000, put it that way ... since that's basically what we're pondering here.

Now, as an aside, if you look at a card like a gtx460 768MB, with it's rather small memory bus vs. large amount of core power, a memory OC is actually very beneficial on one of those
