Help with 4.2ghz Stability

Thread Starter
So I managed to get up to 4.2ghz and while going any higher doesn't seem practical without water cooling, I feel like I should be able to get this stable.

I can sit in Prime95 on Blend for an hour with no issues but 20 minutes in WoW causes a blue screen or other freeze.

I've tried upping vCore a couple notches, but that isn't seeming to help. I'm not overclocking my RAM at all (it's actually underclocked, with stock timings) so I haven't touched it... my vTT is set to 1.4 which proved stable up to a BCLK of 200. My BCLK is 193 right now so I haven't touched vTT.

A few things I've tinkered with that might be causing the problem (not sure):

CPU/GPUSpread Spectrum: Disabled
CPU/ICH Clock Skew: 300ps
CPU Differential Amplitude: 800mV

Other than that the voltages I'm running at the moment are:

vCore 1.375v (higher than when I started, tried to stabilize by adding voltage.)
vTT: 1.4v
vDRAM: 1.65v

CPU PLL: 1.8v
ICH: 1.1v
IOH: 1.36v

Sitting at 193mhz BCLK
Core Ratio: 22x
Uncore: 20x
DRAM: 10x
QPI: 18x (36x)

Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

A 1 hour blend run in Prime 95 has my hottest core at 63C at a vCore of 1.35v.

Do you pass Prime Small and Large FFTs as well? Blend doesn't stress the CPU to its maximum.

Running small FFTs now. I've disabled all the misc. crap I listed before, differential amplitude, etc, and am trying vCore at 1.352v (DOWN from before) but with a slightly higher vTT at 1.425v...

And just BSODed after about a minute. Faster than on Blend, for sure. More vCore, then? I think I might test my RAM in memtest86+ really fast to make sure it's stable... then I would know for sure that i need to adjust vCore or vTT, right?

What error code do you get when u BSOD? Most of the time its up the vCore. Around 4.2 I'd imagine vCore would need to be around 1.4v at least.

I'm not 100% certain, I'll attempt to recreate the BSOD so I can catch it.

I haven't seen the BSOD again, but running 185mhz bclk with a cpu ratio of 23x and a vcore of 1.375 seems good so far, running small ffts. Doesn't allow me to get as much out of my ram and qpi, though.

Edit: Hottest core is getting to 68C in Prime95 with those settings, thinking about backing off on the vCore and seeing what happens. Should I worry at that temp? Max temp is like 80, right?

damn i wish i could run a 23x multi.... only 10-22 and 24... unless i go to 2 cores then i can use up to 27 which i find strange... Anywho if i were you i would run 21x200 since 21 seems to be the most stable multi.

How can I run a 200mhz BCLK? That's what I don't udnerstand... 200mhz bclk with a QPI ratio of 18x puts the QPI Data Rate higher than allowed, doesn't it? Isn't the maximum like 7ghz DDR? 200mhz puts it at 7.2ghz DDR.

At the same time, when I was testing for max BCLK, I was able to push it to around 220... Not sure how that works....

The research I had done dictated that the qpi clock should not exceed 3.5ghz DDR or 7ghz effective. At a bclk speed of 200mhz and a qpi multiplier of 18x, you get 3.6ghz DDR or 7.2ghz effective. I thought that this was the source of my instability when attempting this. is it not actually a problem? Is there aqpi speed limit with the 950? Or is it just a matter of raising vTT?
