Honestly the biggest thing limiting the Kinect right now is the software not the hardware. In April they should be releasing an update that quadruples the resolution of the camera, allowing it to detect fingers and hand rotation.

If anyone isn't impressed by what Microsoft has done with the Kinect then I strongly advise you to look up Computer Vision. It's a very difficult subject, and not one to scoff lightly at.
