i dunno 4 x7560's a bit faster then 2 opteron's so 4 opterons should be better then 4 xeons

Theres was a guy in this site that had the BADDEST! Computer, it was 256 cores and did 600 thousand PPD. I think it was a server for his work. Get that OP.

fRingE, you're going to flame me, but you hijacked this thread for a while. Also, even if he is trolling, the community is providing useful information to anyone who might be looking to buy something like this.

On Topic: It would be great if you told us your budget and what exactly in CAD you're using this for, OP. I'm an intel boy, but that's just me.

i would say go with the quad amd rig that is the g34 socket since the new cpu architecture will be compatible with it AND chances are you will not be able to overclock it because it is a server board

edit: your going to be getting performance from a quad amd rig than a dual socket intel rig... just saying! and the g34 socket is going to be compatible with the next line up of cpus so if you want to upgrade within the next year you will be able to without upgrading your mobo

this takes me back to my college days when mp mobos were the rage before multi cores came out, i miss those days lol.
i would be very interested to see how much the build costs you when your finished,
As in the next 2 years i will need to build an extreme server to run fsx on my flight training devices instead of building more gaming rigs,
but that is some time away. gl with your project.
Also out of curiosity how much do you pay for a rendering service?

Good luck to you too with your project! I'll try to keep you updated on the system I end out with.
regarding the distributed farm rendering, you can see a calculator here: http://www.rebusfarm.com/rebusshop-2_en.html so if a single frame takes 2 hours locally on a standard i7 cpu and we need frames enough to create 10 seconds of animation it will cost 1200USD so it's a pretty extreme pricetag!

yeh lol i had considered building a machine to render video for people at a cost.
A close friend of mine owns a music video production company but he will only use a mac he won't even consider a pc but im like surely an i7 machine will render faster because some of those videos take forever the last one was a dvd for ambush tv in canada and it took 16 hours to render and there are lots of up and coming producers out there that can't afford a powerful machine in fact final cut wont even run on the lower end macs.
p.s thanks for that link btw i am going to send it to him.
