New to F@H. Questions...

Thread Starter
I have downloaded the default client for my PC., It is my I7 Sig rig. Did i download he right program? Its one of the first ones @ the folding at home download page. My gpu's usage fluctuates, and sometimes only goes up if i am watching the "display of atoms moving" My cpu isn't really used a lot (20-35%). Any ideas why?
I'd like to join the OCN team, but i have a question. Does it give any of my information away?

Folding at home isn't going to go after any of your data or browsing history if that's what you mean. All it looks at is its' own program to see if appropriate information is given.

Which one should i download? Can anyone send me steps? I tried the one from the FAQ, but it was command line based.

EDIT: i downloaded one for my gpu by accident. It says performance is 641NS/DAY. Is this good? Is there one that can use both of them?

This thread will tell you what to do.

I don't have any idea what 641NS/DAY means - sorry. The progress of your CPU or GPU is measured by points and specifically by points per day (PPD). No, you cannot use the same client for the CPU as you do for GPUs.

In Windows-based folding there are several basic folding clients.

1) Basic/Graphical Client - Has a pretty screen that shows the molecule(s) that your rig is folding. BUT - it is slower than the other clients, tends to have issues not even related to folding (the graphic component) and simply shouldn't be selected if you want to really fold quickly and help F@h by being a fast(er) folder.

2) SMP/BigAdv Client - Takes advantage of multi-core (usually quad or hexa core processors) to perform more complex folding calculations. BigAdv folding gets your rig bonus points for folding complex folds more quickly. A bit more complex to setup than the basic client, but much more rewarding for you and for F@h. BigAdv > SMP > Basic in other words.

3) GPU Clients - There are two sub-categories, GPU2 (non-Fermi) and GPU3 (Fermi) in this one. Basically nVidia video cards are the ones you want to use with folding calculations - at least right now they are. They (meaning nVidia) have worked more closely with F@h than their competition (AMD/ATI) and, as a result, simply fold at a fast rate and yield more PPD. The GPU2 folding clients is used with 2XX-Series and older nVidia cards, GPU3 folding clients are used with 4XX-Series and newer nVidia cards. Some complexity in setting them up but a very good tutorial is available here:

http://www.overclock.net/folding-hom...gpu-guide.html

The above assumes you have Windows 7 of course.

Good luck - we're here to help.
