Need help overclocking my 970 - Page 3

If those things fails then it is not stable. Computer can work perfectly fine with an unstable clock under windows. Only when it is stressed, unstability issue surfaces. Up your voltage or lower your frequency.

Once it finish one run it will show the time and result, and second run will start. It takes like 3-4mins per run depending on how much ram you are using

So I guess simply folding isnt a good stress test? Thats what I am doing now and it hasn't crashed yet. I just feel like 1.4 is way above average for this chip. If I have my voltage set at 1.4 but cpuz reads 1.36, is that my mobos fault of the programs fault?

when you say p95 failed, you mean a worker thread died? or some kind of error.

from my experience prime95 is the easiest program to use to diagnose the causes of instability.

if your ram is overclocked reduce it to stock speed or lower.

also, if you are getting errors in prime95 such as worker thread stopping, or other errors increase the vcore. if you still get errors increase it more.

if you get a bluescreen it is a problem with your imc/vtt or ram timings/frequency. if you dont have your ram overclocked and you can be sure that it is not the cause of the instability increase the vtt voltage.

some chips require a rediculous amount of voltage to reach higher clocks. mine is one of them. with llc disabled i need 1.3975 vcore and 1.3 vtt to maintain a 24hour p95 stable 4ghz overclock. and this is with an sli setup and 8gb of memory. with a single videocard my vtt is much lower.

this is known as vdroop. enabling llc will fix this, however i do not recommend using load line calibration. i would only use that as a last resort.

also folding is a terrible stability test. sure it will let you know your overclock is unstable, but it will be nearly impossible to diagnose it. alot of people use linx, but for me p95 is the easiest to diagnose with.

good luck, please report back and let us know how it goes. and dont be afraid to crank up the voltage a bit. i will post back with the absolute maximum voltages for your chip here shortly.

1.4 is the absolute maximum vcore and vtt voltages for your cpu. i suggest you aim for a lower overclock. try 4ghz first. get that stable then go higher. i know it sounds time consuming, but in my experience its alot easier to get a stable 4.1 or 4.2 after you have gotten a stable 4.0.

starting off small will give you a better bearing of what your voltages should be. its a good learning experience. right now you are attempting a high overclock with no idea of what neighborhood your voltages will fall in. right now its kind of like a guessing game. thats why its always best to start off smaller.

also it would be a great idea to find your maximum stable bclk. lower the multi to maintain your stock speed or close to it while raising the bclk. voltage adjustments might be needed in small amounts. im not sure about x58 but with p55 anything over 197bclk you need to change the clock generator. i forgot what the setting was called in the bios. i will post back with a description.

1.45v is the maximum safe voltage for your CPU. The other guy was right. 1.4v is maximum.

LinX looks like this while it's running:

EDIT: And there's nothing wrong with your motherboard.

Regarding one of my previous posts, I apologize if it came across rude. It was truly not meant that way. I really do appreciate the valuable advice I have received tonight, and think I have found my stable settings. Now it is time for some overnight stability testing. I will post back with my results.

They added 6 core support several releases ago. I flashed the bios last month and haven't checked since then.

guys theres nothing wrong with his board. why do you keep making broad suggestions about his board, when there is hardly any information available about his instability symptoms.

op: there is nothing wrong with your board, you just need to start from the beginning. small overclock, and find maximum bclk for that board. i suggest find the max bclk first.
