i7 920 4ghz not stable

post #1 of 27
Thread Starter
Having some issues getting stable at 4ghz, not sure what I should be doing next.

My SPecs:

i7 920 D0 at 3.8ghz stable
R2 Gene mobo
Mushkin 1600mhz 6gb ram
H50 Corsair CPU cooler

My BIOS:

I had Vcore on 1.25, QPI on 1.35, 21x multiplier, 190 BCLK, RAM on 1.65v. All others were set to auto. After running prime for about 10min I got a BSOD error. I then upped Vcore to 1.275, still BSOD error. Tried 1.28, stil BSOD. Anyone know what I should be trying next?? Thank you!

More vcore! You can also try bumping your IOH voltage a little bit. Set it to +.05v from whatever you start at, so if it's 1.1v take it to 1.15v.

THanks for the quick reply, my IOH voltages were on auto before. What would you recommend me change it to?

It takes me roughly 1.32v to get stable at 4.1GHz (HT on). Assuming you have HT on as well, I'd say try somewhere above the 1.3v range.

Not sure on the settings of your RAM, but I'd say keep them underclocked for the moment until you get a stable 4Ghz. After that you can work on the RAM speed.

Also, found a list that were supposed to be BSOD codes for i7's. I haven't verified anything myself but it doesn't hurt to try.

0x101 = increase vcore
0x124 = increase/decrease vcore or QPI/VTT...have to test to see which one it is
0x0A = unstable RAM/IMC, increase QPI first, if that doesn't work increase vcore
0x1E = increase vcore
0x3B = increase vcore
0xD1 = QPI/VTT, increase/decrease as necessary
0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency or uncore multi unstable, increase RAM voltage or adjust QPI/VTT, or lower uncore if you're higher than 2x
0x116 = Low IOH (NB) voltage, GPU issue (most common when running multi-GPU/overclocking GPU)
0X109 = Not enough or too Much memory voltage
So sexy it Hz

I do have HT on and my RAM timings are 8-8-8-24, 1530mhz I believe (auto) when my BCLK is 190.

at 1.275vcore, 1.35QPI, I get D1 BSOD error. <- this would mean increase QPI? even at 1.35?
at 1.28vcore, 1.35QPI, BSOD error is 1E. <- this means increase vcore according to above, so I guess I will test at 1.3vcore and see how that goes.

What's the error you're getting?

It's probably not the vCore being too low, 1.25v or a little over does the job for most 920's, unless you've got a lesser one. Try upping the IOH/ICH and check if the QPI isn't too high at 1.35v because some chips just prefer it lower, especially when only running at 4Ghz. Just keep the 0.5v maximum difference between QPI/VTT and RAM voltage in mind.

My ram voltage is at 1.65, I will def remember not to exceed the .5voltage limit. I'm going to go back to 1.275vcore, and play around with lowering QPI.

update:

QPI 1.3, VCORE 1.275, CPU AMP differential 1000mv. Error 101
QPI 1.3, VCORE 1.285, " - Error 3B

been running prime95 for about 45min, vcore is 1.29 so far. And strangely... Coretemp crashed while i was running the test, but didnt BSOD me. Is this a sign of instability already?
