460GTX SLI runnign Crysis Slow - help!!!

Thread Starter
I have 460 SLI and Crysis fps are low - 30fps or less @ 1920x1080 with Very High settings, not much better at high and even medium settings. Other games play maxed out and forum posts show 460GTX SLI as having 60fps or better at 1920x1200 ???

I tried HIGH settings with motion blur OFF, then windowed @ 1600x1080 and still get less than 25fps during fight scenes (I'm using the School Building sequence).

I can run Mass Effect AA x64, Aniso x16 and fps pretty much stays pegged @ 62fps
Even can run ME2 with AAx8 and it plays smooth

can't figure why Crysis runs so poorly

See how much the CPU usage is while playing, your CPU might be bottlenecking your 460s.

there is a definitely noticeable CPU bottleneck.
but those fps are too low.
make sure vsync is off!
I assume you are SLIng 1 GB GTX 460 correct?

The original Crysis or Warhead?

Both are system eaters, but the original Crysis was horribly optimized.
1) Windowed mode doesn't always work w/SLI
2) Crysis takes a lot of CPU power, and your CPU isn't all that powerful.
3) You can't just compare your FPS in some random location in the game w/what people are getting running the benchmark because there is HUGE variance in FPS depending on where you are in the game. The benchmark is during a pretty easy part of the game actually.

And just for the record, its VERY difficult to rule out CPU bottlenecks just by looking at the CPU usage graphs, so take whatever you see there w/a grain of salt. The most reliable way to check for CPU BN is to run a benchmark at stock, then with CPU OC'd, then calc the % difference in FPS divided by the % difference in CPU clocks. The closer that ratio is to 1, the more bottlenecked you are.

vsync was on so I turned it off, 768MB cards, no AA 1920x1080 res

cpu does 70% max, so I don't think there's a bottleneck problem, there's plenty of system memory available while gaming ... cpu is OCed to 3.2GHz and 460GTX's OCed to 850/1950

ok, I'll try cpu test and calc % ansd see what's what ...

what CPU to upgrade too ? I was thinking Phenom II x 4 955 BE but I have little cash left after going SLI so I don't want to upgrade cpu if I really don't have too

But Crysis only effectively uses 2 cores (and the 2nd one not always that well), so if you have a 3 core CPU, then 70% usage could very well mean you have a BN going on.

This is why I say I say it's very difficult to rule out CPU BN based on CPU usage alone. You have to have fairly in-depth knowledge of the application and how well (or not) it uses multiple cores

Also, VH w/1080p resolution in Crysis is pushing it w/768MB of vram ... you should use the OSD capability of MSI Afterburner so you can monitor VRAM and GPU Usage while gaming. Generally-speaking if you aren't seeing 90-100% usage on both cards in Crysis, it's also a pretty reliable sign of CPU BN'ing, or of tapping out one's vram.
