ok, I downloaded the Crysis Warhead Benchmark and got this result ...

DirectX 10 ENTHUSIAST 3X @ Map: ambush @ 0 1920 x 1080 AA 4xx
==> Framerate [ Min: 14.88 Max: 45.00 Avg: 28.28 ]

in a www.Benchmark Reviews write up the 460GTX 768MB SLI got this result ...

avg 30fps

my rig is running ok and this result is without any GPU OC

GPU's never exceeded 80% and memory maxed @ 751MB

I gave it a whirl, now it's time to hang up the PC gaming and do a few RMA's

thanks for all the replies wave2.gif

Check your CPU utilization after running the test. Crysis is highly GPU-dependent but it wouldn't hurt to look.

Also, don't run enthusiast or "very high" setting with that hardware. Run gamer or high with 0-4xAA. Crysis is extremely demanding on GPUs.

His CPU isn't the problem at all. It's those 768MB 460's. I tested this theory with my sig rig at 2.75GHz and then at 3.71GHz. There was only a 2 FPS increase.

Crysis is more GPU hungry than CPU hungry. And the Fermi chips honestly don't do well in Crysis.

Lack of VRam, clearly.
When I ran crysis (vanilla) with my HD5850, it was always hitting 950mb in VRAM usage, so that's your problem

I monitored VRAM and it never goes past 720MB

I decided to try the advice given earlier, about running Crysis demo stock cpu and then OCed and using fps data to see if there's a bottle neck.

So i put my OCed cpu to stock speed and the Avg frame rates actually improved ...

DirectX 10 GAMER 3X @ Map: ambush @ 0 1920 x 1080 AA 4xx
==> Framerate [ Min: 14.98 Max: 60.56 Avg: 38.49 ]

that's quite an improvement from 28.28fps using cpu OCed @ 2.9GHz

This cpu runs stable @ 3.2GHz (FSB OC)? Could it be my power supply?
My system signature shows a 650W XFX but i'm still using Fatal1ty 550W
until Monday whe the XFX PS arrives

I thought fps went up as you Oc the cpu/FSB?

On 1080p with the original Crysis, High, no AA, I got about 55fps on a GTX460SLI 768. Turn up AA and FPS go down. If you have AA on with 1920x1200 and that CPu you are probably about right.

if you're capped at 24-25FPS is the 24hz bug in Crysis and Warhead. It select the slowest Refresh rate of you're monitor/Tv, If you're monitor has 24hz than it select it.

The only way to correct it is to create a 1080p/60hz custom resolution in the Nvidia Control panel..

i believe on the first test you tested with enthusiast settings and on the 2nd one you tested with gamer wink.gif
anyway i get around 48 fps avg on very high in original crysis at 1440x900 no antialiasing. VRAM usage is maxed out.
you are highly VRAM limited!!!
get 1GB cards

I know Crysis REALLY well, and I'm here to tell you Tomana that based on your reports, you are being cpu and/or vram-capacity-limited. A quick and reasonably accurate way to determine which of those two is the case is to drop the resolution to like 1440x900 and see what happens to FPS, because that will significantly drop vram usage. If it doesn't go WAY up, then it's CPU issue.

The scores your reporting definitely look low, as two 460's in SLI with enough vram and enough CPU power would be like 50% higher than what you're reporting.

Apparently there's still a lot of people around here who under-appreciate the role of the CPU in Crysis. It's no slouch when it comes to CPU demands, and it's made more acute by the fact that it only uses 2 cores (1 well, and the 2nd not as well).

Trust me when I say that a slower CPU without a robust, large cache architecture will start to struggle at a relatively low FPS. Chip architecture issues can even cause CPU clock increases to not even help that much.

This all being said, it could easily mostly be a vram cap problem in this particular scenario.

^ highly agree with brettjv above.
at 1440x900 very high no AA it already uses up the full frame buffer of my 768 MB GTX 460. when i put on AA a very slight stuttering occurs.

you should try the game at a lower resolution, or lower the texture to like medium at 1080p and report back.

this is an OBVIOUS vram bottleneck. you run out of VRAM and the card start using system RAM and HDD causing stuttering and low min fps.
i've played this game with GTS 250 512 MB at 1440x900 with very high texture and it stutter like crazy. when i lower the texture to medium, the stuttering stop and the game was playable on all medium with high shader.

again crysis is a VRAM hog. until you get 1 GB cards do not set texture to anything higher than medium on any res higher than 1600x900!
