Nikon macro lenses?

Thread Starter
Hey there, I recently got my D3100 and I've been loving it. However, I wish to do more macro photography and I've been browsing around for recommendations.

So far I've seen the 105mm 2.8 Nikon being recommended, but it does cost quite a hefty penny. I looked on the Nikon website and found the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR listed as another macro lens. Any thoughts on this one or any other lenses that I could possibly purchase?

Well one way you could save money is buying an AF lens instead of an AF-S lens. This means that you would lose auto-zoom on your camera, but for macro you probably wouldn't be using auto anyways. Just a suggestion.

Autofocus. Autozoom doesn't exist.

I have the 85mm and its a nice lens, takes some pretty pictures. Maybe ill finally get some uploaded to show you but I have few good ones since the day i bought it my GF thinks its hers lol. For macro on a budget it seems pretty nice especially if you can find it sub $500.

I'm pretty sure that sigma has some nice macro lenses for pretty cheap. I don't remember off hand, and I am on my phone now, I'll check when I get home.

You could always play around with extension tubes for around 10 dollars... I was to cheap to buy a dedicated macro lens and went this route, the results wont be as good but you can still play around for hardly any money..

The way I see the 85 VR is this:

It's Nikon's softest macro.
It's kind of a one-trick pony. Too long for a walk-around lens, and too slow for low light, portraiture, and sports.
Price. You can find a used 105 f/2.8 AF-D for about the same, which is a much sharper lens, especially if you're just going to use it for macro. Plus, when you get a better body it will be a fairly useful lens, overall.

To be honest, I don't think those sample images really qualify as macro.
