Building my Light Box

Thread Starter
I started building my light box tonight. I built the frame and mounted the lights. I took a picture of my son's toy with the lights on it. I want to use it to compare before and after photos with the light box.

I'm using a Nikon D40 with the stock 18-55 mm lens.

I'm not quite sure what to build the box out of yet. I looked for white silk today or some other material to defuse the light. I have not had any success in finding anything.

Do you all have any ideas for a cheap material to defuse light. I have some white window sheers I could use on this project sitting in the closet do you think that would work?

You could use white foam board. I've seen it work really well. The only problem being it's not rigid. Any thick, smooth, white fabric should work though. And those lights seem awful yellow. Try getting some fluorescent light bulbs.

I have some florescent bulbs that I can put in the fixture. To be honest I haven't made it to looking at the bulbs.

I put up white tablecloth for mine lit with desk lamps, white balance corrected in PP. I'll show you some pictures after I finish eating

Alrighty, so this is my current setup. Excuse the mess; I just finished a photoshoot and was too lazy to clean up so far. The images usually turn out yellow because of the two desk lamps, but it's easy enough to fix in PP.

Also attached are some recent images I took using the lightbox.

that's a good setup. if you have a white ceiling, just use bounce flash, the results are much better and you can handhold the camera. it's the same method i used for the photos of the lenses I have on sale.

to be honest i wouldn't go too far with light boxes unless you really need a certain lighting effect. what i do is take out my 30" x 40" roll of poster board that i bought for $3 at michaels, tape the thing on a right angle making sure the transition from the wall to table is smooth and use bounce flash.

it also creates a nice fill light effect from the flash bouncing back up from the poster board to fill in the shadows from the bottom and sides. and since you're using flash, you're going to be in the sweet spot of the lens at f/5.6 - f/11 so the pictures always come out looking sharp and devoid of any abberations. the results is as good as it gets and you dont have to spend a ton on building rigs and getting lamps.

get white bed sheets and bounce the light off of it instead of trying to diffuse it. it wont be as bright but it will be a lot softer.

i did this photo with a single reflector plus a dining room ceiling light(3 bulbs).

I picked some stuff up from Wal-mart to play with. I found some kind of really strong foam board. I will experiment today and see if I can get a decent picture.

That looks really good. I also picked up a white table cloth, some white material form the crafts dept, and a bed sheet. I seen your post while I was at the store waiting on my wife

Thats a really good picture. I looked for the poster board while I was out, but I couldn't find any. I live in a very small town. I'm gonna look today when I go to the next town over.

I wish I could hand hold a camera, but for medical reasons I can't so I need to use a tripod.

Understand I know almost nothing about photography.

Okay my set up this time is with florescent bulbs pointed at the celling and wall( I only had the 60 watt equivalent at home). I laid out a white sheet I will remove the wrinkles later.

It seems to me that these pictures have more yellow in them. I am assuming that I am not using a strong enough light, or am I missing something completely here?

These are the image details. Is there a setting I need to play with a bit?
