HD 5870 using Overdrive to 900mhz

Thread Starter
I have a Sapphire HD5870, and have never OCed a GPU in my life. I was wondering, by using the overdrive that came with CCC, is it safe to OC the card to 900MHZ? Would I need aftermarket cooling? I ordered a Accelero Extreme 5870 and that's coming in less than a week's time. I plan to play around with OCing more as I just got my CPU to 3.8ghz stable.

PS: I have a gamexstream 700W psu.

I set my 5870 to 900MHz the first day I got it and has been there since. I have the Vapor-X version from Sapphire but right now I'm sitting at 30C. Not sure what game temps are but when I started they were no where near hot(like mid 50s), so I stopped looking.

You should be fine since 900MHz isn't much of an OC. If you do it, just monitor the temps and you should be fine.

You can easily hit 900mhz on stock volts. Heck, I only needed to bump my voltage up to 1.21v in order to hit 950mhz. Even at 900mhz (what I am running at now), you will have mild temps while under load so make sure you ramp up the fan to 25-30%.

a 5870 on 900mhz is nothing. Mine has been sitting there forever with no temp change from 850. My fan is on 21% at auto and i never get over 60c on load. Using a stock cooler.

Hmm odd... I am running a Crossfire setup so since my cards are nearly sandwiched on top of each other, maybe that explains as to why I have high temps.

Thanks for the replies, other than moving the slider to 900 MHZ what else do I need to do to make sure everything is stable?? Coming from the CPU side.. getting stable is a pain in the butt =|

Furthermore, does anyone have a link to a guide on OCing GPUs? That way I can try things myself and not bomb you guys with questions. Thanks!

EDIT: saw the sticky, nvm! thx all.
