A good quality surge protector is a minimum I would think.
Personally I have 3 APC UPS 1500 watt Power Backups for my computers (5), satellite system, phone and fax.
Each UPS can give me approx. 1-1/2 hours of power for my machines if need be which is more than enough time to shut things down if it looks like the power will be out for a while.
Of course I live in an area where when the power does go off, it may be out for a few hours as well and we get our share of lightning strikes during the year that can take things out as well.
Luckly I have not lost any equipment that is hooked to my UPS's and APC has a very generous protection insurance for you if something should happen.
I always recommend to people that I go work on computers for to get protection. It is a heck of a lot cheaper than a new computer!!
Nuff said.
