If you haven't already, changing the themal paste and dusting out the heatsink usually helps those stock single slot coolers from my experience.

If that doesn't work it might be worth picking one of these up, considering how cheap they are.

at $50 bucks shipped it pretty much destroys anything Microcenter or Newegg has in the price range. Yeah its a card from 2008 yet it destroys cards like the 5670 from 2010 which can run almost 100 bucks in some places.

These Dual Slot EVGA 9xxx's are really good for overclocking in NVtune as well. I forget if they have voltage control, yet I got my EVGA Dual Slot 9600GSO to overclock very well. Also don't forget Physx and Folding!

Basically it will play games like Starcraft II and Warcraft very well while playing alot of modern games smoothly on medium.

How would this card stack up against a GTS 450 1GB?

I'm looking to upgrade the video card on a secondary cpu, used mainly by my other half for youtube / DVDs and a little bit of gaming (but not much). I'm deciding today whether to go for:

1) 9800 GT Akimbo w/ SCII for $99.99

or

2) EVGA GTS 450 for $99.99

I would like the extra copy of SCII, as I'll probably end up buying it anyways so it's basically a toss up between a $40 - $50 9800GT or a $100 GTS 450...

A GTS 450 is worth the extra 50 bucks. It will be a viable card for at least a year and a half more.

the 9800GT is just a good value at $50 shipped because it basically performs on par or better than a 4830.

A 5670 can be like 80-100 shipped and isn't really better than a 9800gt at $50 shipped.

The following chart gives an idea of how most modern cards stack up to the high end 6 series

no prob

If you are just going to play Starcraft II exclusively and little else then buy the 9800GT/StarCraft II package for a 100. It will run that game really well.

but if you are looking to branch out later then a GTS 450 would be a good idea for the longrun.

It all has to do with what kind of gamer you are.

That's where I'm debating at the moment. I use my sig rig for gaming (which I need to update, but I'm running an EVGA GTX 570 atm) and this computer really doesn't need a whole lot. If the 9800 GT will run SCII nicely I may just go for it.

The other rig is a bit older with a Pentium D 3.0 GHz chip, 4 GB RAM. Right now the old video card is the bottleneck by a mile and I need to swap it out, won't even run streaming low quality video smoothly. I'm not 100% sure which GPU it's currently running, but I do know it's an old GeForce, maybe a GT 430?

Decisions, decisions.

Any other recommendations for a sub-$100 video card?
