The cheapest graphic card for an editing rig? - Page 4

I'm extremely confused by this thread. The only consumer-level card that works with GPU-accelerated effects in CS5 is the GTX470...

Oh dear...I didn't even notice this

http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/systemreqs/

GTX 470 is the lowest choice

Or the GTX 280, which might be a better choice.

No guys. Apparently, those list only consists of cards that Adobe had run through testing.

According to this article: http://www.studio1productions.com/Ar...remiereCS5.htm, almost all recent NVIDIA cards COULD be used for GPU acceleration, save for a few lines of text file hacking.

Quote:
Adobe Premiere CS5 was release with the new Mercury Playback Engine (MPE) that can use a video card’s GPU to accelerate playback, effects and rendering.

However, Adobe has only “certified” a few video cards from NVIDIA. (See Note 4 at the end of this article, About Adobe's Certified Video Cards). According to Adobe, video cards are certified after they have gone through rigorous testing which takes time. With all of the different video cards from NVidia and the variations of these video cards, it's easy to understand why Adobe didn't certify more video cards.

If you don't have a certified card, there is a way to edit a file and add your video card to a list, so Adobe Premiere CS5 will allow your video card to run with GPU Acceleration. Some people call this hacking or unlocking the video cards, whatever you choose to call it, this will not make it "certified" in the eyes of Adobe. But, you will be able to use the GPU Acceleration feature of Adobe Premiere CS5.
In addition to that, these are the cards that the author of the article has successfully "unlocked" in CS5:
Quote:
Note 1

At Studio 1 Productions have tested unlocking the following cards, so far:

GT 220, GT 240, GTX 250, GTX 260, GTX 275, GTX 285, GTX295, 9400GT, 9500 GT, 9600 GT, 9800 GT, GT430, GTS450, GTX460, GTX470, GTX480 and GTX580

We tried the 9400 GT, while it worked, we saw no difference between running the Mercury Playback Engine in software or hardware mode. It simply doesn't have enough CUDA cores to be helpful on our test systems.

That list from adobe is just the cards that are certified to work. If you have an uncert. card, you just have to edit a file, and it should work

Wow, didn't realized this thread has spanned to four pages!!!

Thank you all for the considerate suggestions and inputs.

I finally decided to go with the GTS 250. But as I went to my local computer store(s), they do not have the ware on stock.

So I went with the Biostar GeForce GT 240 1GB 128bit GDDR5 instead. I spent $97 dollars for it and can't wait to see it in action.

Link to Biostar site: GT 240 DDR5.
Link to enable CUDA support uncertified cards in Adobe Premiere CS5: Studio1Production.

I hope this thread could be useful for future video editors looking for bargain CUDA enabled graphic cards.

Cheerio.
