Try at 4Ghz+

Thread Starter
Ok, I did a huge mod with my case and got a new CPU cooler. I am ready for a second go at anything above 4Ghz.
I have never succesfully overclocked, so I'm not sure where I should even start. My first try I could run 5 minutes of prime95, but I didn't know what was wrong becuase both my ram and CPU were out of stock speed.

What is the wattage on ur chip...and what are the load temps on your chip right now at stock volts? Use HW Monitor to see your core temps?

Well, in my thread trying to OC my RAM someone helped me with CPU. I was not successful with my RAM though...

My amazing temps are :
4.014ghz
100% load - 41˚C
Browsing Windows - 21˚C

you used fsb to achieve 4ghz? or was it a multi/fsb combo?
i ask because my chip has an upwards locked multi,so in turn i had to set 275x15 to get 4.1,but because its an fsb overclock,it decreases latency across everything else connected to it,so it puts a strain on the rest of the system including the ram,try keeping your ht to around 2000 and your htt roughly the same and lowering the ram clock to get stability first?

If your ram is the problem try this rule of thumb...the faster in mhz your ram is the more loose the timings should be and the slower the ram in mhz the tighter the timings should be. Example

If you oc the ram to 1600mhz run the timings at 8-8-8-24 or 9-9-9-24
If you slow the ram to say 1000mhz run the timings at 7-7-7-20

The CR or Command Rate does alot with stability. Again same rule as above, for the faster ram use 2T cr (slower) and for the slower mhz ram use 1T(faster timing)

At 1000Mhz you should be running the timings at 5-5-5-15 or bust. Seriously, 1000Mhz is a DDR2 clock more than anything, almost all 1000-1066Mhz DDR2 can run at 5-5-5-15 latencies. Otherwise DDR3 has no point, you should be downgrading back to DDR2.

Exactly...there is only so slow you want to take ddr3 ram before ur just wasting ur overall rig potential

At the moment :
*14 for a multiplier
*I can run Prime 95 for around 30 mins before blue screen, but I can game forever.
*I'm running 1144Mhz with my DDR3 at 6-6-6-18. I have been told my generic RAM is weird, so Its hard to OC and stablize.
*My NB is as high as it gets (around 2850Mhz )
*HT is at 2002Mhz
