2560x1440 to 1080P now 15C lower?

Thread Starter
So, I changed back to a 1080P for a number of reasons and something unexpected happened.... I'm now idling over 15C lower at 31C per GTX 580. Is this a normal behavior? Also, my CPU idle dropped 10C to 29C at the highest core. What gives? I'm not talking about load temps keep in mind.

Kinda obvious.

Going from 2560X1440 to 1080P means both your CPU and GPU work less hard, meaning they generate less heat, so they are cooler.

Were you checking usage % before and after the monitor change? That is most likely the big difference.

Your GPUs are still doing work at idle... it takes some gpu power just to render windows aero and 2d applications. Twice the pixels still means more work.

Side note, why the change. Coming from 1600p I could never go back to 1200p.

My previous 470s (tri) were standing at idle at 60c on air when I used 3 monitors on them.

When I switched to 1 monitor, they would idle at 40c.

Same on the 5970 I had, same on the 5870, and similar on the 580s.

The higher the screen, the more the GPU has to work, even tho it means just idle at windows desktop.

The CPU I'm not sure why the so big drop, but most likely its because of the heat from the GPU also affecting the CPU a bit (depends on your setup and how close they are to each other).

Would make sense. My fermi card throttles right back to 0.8v on the core in 2D mode on the desktop. If your 580 was working hard enough at the high res's, it wouldn't get a chance to drop right down.

happens with my 460 as well.. with 1 v 2 screens temps with 1 screen are like - 10 to 15 normaly..

The reason the temps are high on gpu is because the card does not downclock itself to the lowest set point when u run more then 1080 or multiple monitors, it's something nvidia puts in their drivers now, nothing you can do about it man

Are you sure?
Because I'm not.

My 580s downclock to 51mhz when idle at windows, clock to 405mhz at 2D and clock at 782 at 3D.

My lone 470 does the exact same thing on the HTPC connected to a 1080p TV (except at 3D it goes to 608 ofc).

Nvidia and AMD did implement and up clock on the earlier drivers for the 4xx and 5xxx series, but it was updated later on and implemented downclocking later on.
