stress test or what not

hey there i keep reading about stress test or tests to see what your graphics card can really do and handle and what temps they get to etc..
could someone tell me what tests or programs people use to find this info out?
thanks in advance

msi afterburner comes with kombustor, this moving furry msi emblem is incredibly stressful on graphics cards to render,so it works well as a benchmark.
having said that my 470s can do hours running that at 850/1700/2000 but on the mafia II bench (with just the gpu's ocverclocked) the computer locks up!

Furmark, kombustor, both the same thing pretty much.
Another is OCCT, which has a very powerful GPU test.

When I overclock I usualy run a 3dmark test (either vantage or 11), and if it pass, I try to increase the clocks until it spots.
After that, running kombustor for 20 minutes, and OCCT test with error checking.

EVGA oweners / bios updaters also run the evga percison scan which test for errors (its a bit similar to OCCT gpu test with error checking).

I'm surprised there isnt a sticky about stress testing and the proper way to do it.

I am no expert, and only just recently started over clocking my card. I spent quite a while on google and on the search function here looking for the answer to your very question.

I run Heaven, 3DMark06, 3DMark11 and Kombustor. Kombustor is by far the hardest to satisfy for my system. Where Heaven seems to be pretty happy most of the time, so when using heaven I shoot for a high score.

I have read that rule of thumb is to run the 3DMark programs at their default settings for good comparison against other peoples systems. Who knows what to run kombustor at, like I said its hard to please just running it as is. In Heaven I run 16x anisotropic and 4x anti-aliasing

Then there is the monitoring programs to keep an eye on your heat and make sure your clocks are sticking through the process. I use Core temp because its easy to use to watch my temps for the CPU, CPU-Z for computer info, GPU-Z for graphics info. GPU-Z is cool because you can set it to display max values so you can check your temps.

Kombuster is great, lots of information displayed, I also like heaven for dx11 looking for any artifacts/tears/jitters... but heaven does not really stress the cards much at all... gpuz should allow you to plot/record temps as well, nothing like that and some bfbc2 to heat things up.
