May need to re-do the sign up sheet a bit because of this. We're less than 100 shy of hitting 1440, which increases the chances of two buys, which means we really need to organize a bit better to see how many are in each camp.

Edit: Just did some math (zomg my head hurts) and when weighted with number of fans ordered, bare bones numbers are much higher. This only includes those who have actually said something in the thread, not the polls, since I can't seem to see who voted what.

It's Saturday. By Monday someone could find out if the barebones fans have the rpm sensor circuity, if a casual modder can get at the terminal, and if mere soldering will allow activation of the rpm monitoring function. Unless someone knows these as facts and not supposition, it would not be wise to proceed if rpm sensing is an issue for some barebones fan buyers. The barebones fans may be less expensive in part because they lack the rpm sensing equipment and circuitry. After all, pwm fans are more expensive than other fans because the additional circuitry required is not included in normal fans.

But if some people would be satisfied with 2-wire Gentle Typhoons, the up-front cost might be within OCN's capacity. Or not. In which case people would simply pay in advance and the wait would be short.

Then there would be the rest of us who still want rpm-sensing fans. I do not think the price requested for putting plugs on them is outrageous. There is some labor involved, which probably is not much reduced with the size of the order: hand labor doesn't scale.

Anyway, that's my thinking. And I would still like to investigate with the distributor the idea of ordering a pallet of 720 pwm GT's of mixed speeds. I think there are probably enough of us willing to pay up front and wait 10 months for gems like that.

I pmd reaper, i think hes the only one who has this fan in hand and can answer if they come with the sensor or not already in the housing.

Its only about 1 day for them to add the connections and the rest of the time is shipping back and forth. id say the 5$ charge is outrageous considering i know none of the workers make more then 10-12$ an hour so if 20 people work on this for 10 hours that leaves about 5k in pure profit.

For PWM to take place there need to be a pallet or more fans ordered for them to even do it, so i dont think PWM will happen anytime soon, especially with almost 20k needing to be put forth up from then almost a years wait in return.

Make sure they're running at max rpm, make sure fans in push/pull are running at the same rpm (theoretical same air flow), etc.

That's what I thought. However I have never had a problem with either and could care less, but That's my opinion.

I voted barebones, if we do go barebones id be willing to go back up to 7 fans.
in for 10 barebone fans and hopefully we can get the fan headers and connectors to go with it would make life a lot easier.

Noob question: Can't check with a mulitmeter? It's voltage that controls these fans right? If the fans are not running max or the same from two different connectors, then there's a problem with PSU or mobo depending on who it's connected to. Am I right about this or too simple?

Edit: By the way I'm a either/or/don't care. Though the more money saved is a HUGE plus to me. Problem is that I don't have a decent shop nearby to order the other stuff which means more online buying. Is there shipping fee involved for something so little?

your sort of right, but there are other variances that can cause the fan to not spin a proper rpm, like bad bearings and such, if this happens you will still be getting 12v but the fan would be spinning significantly less rpms. You dont really need a rpm sensor at all if you have a good fan controller. if you just take the fraction of where the knob is placed based off the fans max rpm it easy to just know where the rpm is at.

you know the knob all the way to the right is full speed so half way would be half speed 3/4 way woul be 3/4 speed etc.. its all pretty easy and doesn't require a sensor to tell you.
