Guide to Carbon Fiber Wrap & Gallery

Welcome to the Carbon Fiber Wrap Guide & Gallery

Carbon fiber wrap has been around for a while, used primarily in the automotive customization industry to wrap stuff like spoilers, body panels, interior panels etc. Many people like me have also been applying to CF wrap to computer components as well and it seems like there is a lot of interest for stuff like this. It looks great, isn't too expensive, and could make your computer really sexy. Also when you want to get rid of it, it peels off with relative ease.

Firstly I'd like to say I'm not affiliated with any CF wrapping product... you can buy it from whoever you like smile.gif

This thread will be a guide on everything in the CF wrapping process:
what you'll need, where to buy, how to apply the wrap, as well as a GALLERY to show-off your CF wrapped components!

This is a relatively rough guide, the DIY steps are pretty vague. I will UPDATE this with a much more comprehensive guide next time I wrap something so I can take process pictures. Sorry about that.

Information on the Carbon Fiber Vinyl

There are many types of CF wrap floating around on the market.

Most would agree that 3M-DINOC (made my 3M) is the most original, durable, and highest quality available. It is also the most expensive. 3M-DINOC has a matte finish and has great flexibility for curved / awkwardly shaped objects.

Although 3M-DINOC is recommended, there are many other types you can buy as well. They don't have the same colour, flexibility, or durability. If you're just wrapping something flat (or maybe you prefer the colour), these vinyls may be the better option for you.

Samples below:

What You’ll Need

- Carbon Fiber Vinyl/Wrap
- X-acto Knife (precision cutting blades)
- Cutting surface
- Heat gun / Hair dyer

Where to Buy?

You can find this stuff anywhere, local or online. Just make sure you know what you're getting (3M-DINOC, generic, colour, etc).

Generic stuff should cost only several bucks per square foot. 3M-DINOC should be a bit more, but still under $10 per square feet.

If you can find it locally for a good price, go for that. Search your local craigslist as there should be people selling it for automotive applications.

eBay is a pretty good place to buy CF wrap. I've had good experience with CarbonFiberFilm for the generic stuff. Generic stuff shouldn't differ too much.. I'd still suggest 3M-DINOC though. Just search 3M-DINOC on eBay and you'll get a lot of items. Look for the items that cost the least with shipping included.

How to Apply CF Wrap

-Clean the object you're wrapping. This ensures that the vinyl adheres properly.

-Prepare the items you need, see above.

-Cut the film to a size that fully covers your object, make sure it is bigger not smaller, but don't waste too much either as you'll be cutting the excess off.

-The process is a little too complicated to explain in words so I suggest watching a guide on YouTube. There are many guides for different objects, just google "how to apply 3m dinoc".
EG: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irPHgZf1vIU[/ame]

-Apply the wrap and avoid bubbles by doing it patiently or use a card to streak out the bubbles if needed. Use a hair dryer or heat gun for areas of awkward shape. The heat will cause the vinyl to soften and flex better. Use your fingers or some tool to push in any indents you want to show up:

-Use an X-acto knife to cut off the edges, holes etc.

NOTES

- CF wrapping is a process that requires PATIENCE and attention to detail.

- One bubble will make whatever you just wrapped look like ****.

- Please put attention into the initial cutting as well as the wrapping process.

- Be careful with the knife and hairdryer or heatgun as well!

Thanks and Good Luck!

I hate carbon fiber "look" on anything. I like real carbon fiber smile.gif I wish they made some computer parts out of real CF.

I agree with you but the 3M wrap looks great and is perfect for interiors of cars or computer stuff. Great guide OP.

I want to see somebody wrap the plastic ends on a modular power supply.
