I have a 720 X3 (unlocks to X4) I am using for my backup build.
I had it at 3.6Ghz (X3) for the longest time and it was surprisingly fast for a AM3 triple.

I would look at a 740 X3 or 955 X4 for AM3's.
Thats what your board is right?
It's an AM2+, but supports AM3.

CPU bottleneck. In Source games (l4d2, css, etc...) this will be most prevalent, since they rely so heavily on the CPU. I remember going from an x2 7750 to an i7 920, and yea the difference was HUGE.

At low settings maybe. Left 4 Dead 2 wouldn't even run on such a card.

@ OP, your CPU is the problem. Buy a new one. The easiest upgrade is probably a Phenom II 940, since the majority of AM2 boards can easily support an AM2+ chip with a bios update.

Not to mindlessly nit-pick here, but people are always repeating this, and I really don't understand why

It seems to me that Source-engine games are only 'cpu-dependent' because they run at like 150fps with any remotely-decent gfx card.

Anything that's super-easy to run graphically is going to appear cpu-dependent ... but you have to consider the FPS you're dealing with. I mean, if a 10% OC on the proc gives you 10% fps increase, then you're cpu-bottlenecked, sure ... but if that amounts to going from 300fps to 330fps ... it's not a 'cpu-dependent' game.

In my book, a 'cpu-dependent' game or engine would start to show signs of bottlenecking at like 30-40fps with anything less than a top-notch processor.

If I could pull 100+fps in Half-Life 2 with my old 939-socket single-core at 2.6GHz ... I don't see how this could be considered a heavily cpu-dependent engine relative to the chips that are out nowadays

CPU Bottleneck. Going from a Athlon X2 5600+ (at 3.2Ghz) to an i7 I gained about double FPS in most games I play with just a 4850.
