Really low temps, but artifacting?

First off, this is my first post on overclock.net GPU forums, so I'll get that out of the way

Now for the questions/specs.

Antec 900
eVGA GTX 470
Zalman VF3000F
Core: 850
Memory: 2000
Voltage 1087

Idle temps 28 celcius
Load temps 45 celcius

I use Vantage and Kombuster to test, and MSI afterburner to overclock.

I'm getting artifacting when I push for 860. Although my numbers seem higher than almost everyone that I have seen so far, I find it very odd that my temps would be so low and I'd get artifacting. I have two theories from reading around and I'm interested in what other people think about this.

1. Vram is heating up and I have no way to monitor it
2. Not enough voltage to push it this hard

Any suggestions? Thanks. I'll answer anyone's questions they have.

You need more voltage, just because temps are low doesn't mean you won't artifact. Give it some more voltage and use occt to test for stability, shaded complexity 8 full screen with error checking on.

your on 850mhz core territory mate..it will be unstable and also the whole card is will just heat up..

push the vcore til 1.1v or more to make it stable..my twins on that voltage can only do me 822 mhz core..1.1v allows me to get to 840 core only with stock cooling but its HOT..

Yes low temps does not mean stable, some cards are just not good overclockers, as long as it doesn't have problems at stock setting, it's not a faulty card.

Well, I have the voltage set as high as Afterburner is going to let me. I'm not sure if it's worth flashing my BIOS over it. This is my first overclocked build so I'm pretty new to all this. I guess if I'm stable at 850Mhz I'll stay there until I convince myself to try 1.1k volts

Overheating is not directly the cause of stability problems actually most of the time. What typically causes stability issues is electron migration, kind of an 'arcing' or 'shorting-out' between the traces on the surface of the chip. The lower the temperature, the less likely you are to get migrations happening, but honestly it can happen at any temp.

Instability can be present without any significant electromigration (an overvolted and overclocked, but stable, chip will be taking much more damage than an underclocked, undervolted, and unstable chip), and higher temps will reduce stability even if electromigration damage is not occurring. Resistance and leakage are higher so there is less power actually used for switching the transistors. Also, capacitance is affected, so cache and registers may lose the contents of their memory before they are refreshed at high temps.

Anyway, even if temps are reasonable, sometimes you just need more voltage for a given clock speed.

What I'z trying to say is that it's electrical issues that are what's really coming into play when you're unstable, and it's really not that strange to hit an OC'ing wall even at lower temps. It's not directly the temps that cause instability, it's the way the electricity is behaving in your card. Really high temps will cause the system to malfunction on an electrical level, but you can cause the same thing to happen just by having clocks too high even if temps seem relatively low
