I am not renting the modem and I have spoken to one of the reps and he said that he checked the modem and it is a newer model modem and it is working fine.

Hmm...

I wonder if it could be the modem though? Just because it's a newer model doesn't mean it's flawless. Not sure how you would go about checking this though.

Reason I'm thinking this is because what if by chance the rep is checking connection but it's only to the modem and stops there? But the communication from your computer to some other server which passes through the modem and is the culprit?

The reps point was probably that since it's a newer modem, it's not using older technology which would bottleneck the connection.

Right, that's what I understood. But is it defective? Could there be something wrong with it? How would a DIY'er check for that? Only thing I can think of is to swap out with another modem. But then you'd have to call Comcast and give MAC address and all that which seems like a hassle to me. Unless I'm wrong about how it all works. I've only let Comcast set up my modem and then I set up my own network from there.

I don't think it's the modem..Unless they completely changed how their stuff works.

I am getting 5mbps at speedtest.net testing to Philadelphia, PA from Harrisburg, PA...doesn't that seem quite low? Same DL rate as me testing to Dallas, TX.

Could they be throttling me because I torrented a movie? (Munich) I received a notice from them about copyright infringement back in November.

I had the same problem back in the days of OptimumOnline. I was getting crappy speeds, and every time I called they just pointed me to one of "their" speed testing webpages which showed me everything was perfect.

The cable from the pole to my house looked iffy, and so did the splitters and other cabling. I was also getting more and more frequent distortions on my TV. They still refused to check.

Then, the day I'd been waiting for finally bestowed upon me: Verison FIOS came right around the corner. I, of course, switched immediately without giving it a second thought. I get 25 up 5 down on testmy.net right now.

When I called Optimum to disconnect, after I already had FIOS, they promised a tech guy right to my door the next day, no problems. It was too late for them, unfortunately.

I say, call them and just proceed to the "disconnect" department. Those usually have more experienced CSRs, and actually have the power to do stuff, like offer you discounts and, more importantly, send tech guys your way. (This also works with other companies: through the "disconnect" department, I once was connected to T-Mobile's Senior Tech Engineer directly, who set-up services I requested on my account which had been supposedly canceled for years.) When you're so pissed you're calling to disconnect, they know it's time for them to quit tossing you around.

^ He said there is no AT&T DSL and no Verizon FIOS option for him. Retention Reps are supposed to know the alternatives, and if there aren't any they will call your bluff

I was a retention rep @ a major cell carrier and there are certain guidelines you use to determine if a customer is worth saving. I don't know how Comcast determines it, but like I said, if there is no alternative provider, threatening to cancel doesn't carry much weight.

At this point you are better served by finding a way to get a tech rep to your house. What issue did your friend have that got him a tech visit so fast? I bet you could remove the coaxial cable from the modem to simulate disconnects to help push a rep out to your location. Explaining and showing the issue to someone in person should help. Might even try picking up a new modem just to eliminate it as a possibility, then returning it if it is not the cause.

Had a comcast technician PM me on this forum. Asked me if I could help him, I told him my specs and everything, no reply from him for a week now. No reply from that twitter comcast guy. I am being ignored everywhere. Only other provider we have in my area is CenturyLink and they are far worse than comcast. I think comcast is throttling me. P2P rates have drastically decreased, everything is much slower. I think this is because of that email that I got from them about copyright infringement when I was downloading Munich.
