desktop for autocad/ solidworks

Thread Starter
a friend of mine want a desk top for auto cad/solidworks. i have been out of the hardware scene for a while and have no clue what is the best bang for buck. budgest is 1000 total os and keyboard/mouse.
i was thinking 8gb 2x4 to start(i have 4 and my system get a little laggy)
quad core amd x2 955/965 (i have a 940 at 3.7) or intel like i said its been a while and i was never really an intel guy but if there's a intel cpu out that performs better for less.
hes going to use his tv as a monitor and get a blu ray drive so he can watch movies.
and a 1tb drive.

It depends on what exactly he is doing with SolidWorks. If he's doing finite element modeling, he may not use more than 2 cores in SW...If he's doing say flow simulations, he could benefit greatly from an 8-thread i7 and SW will load up the entire CPU.

You won't notice a lack of horsepower that much under Autocad unless you're rendering. Acad can only use 1 CPU thread most of the time:

BTW-I'd suggest budgeting a good monitor...and probably NOT a TV. But that is my taste.

Skripka seems to have a good idea of the hardware requirements, but if you're spending ~$200 or more on a cpu then a Sandy Bridge chip is probably the way to go. For a cpu around the $100 mark an Athlon II tri/quad core or a Phenom II dual core (with unlock possibilities) offer great bang for the buck.

what about the PNY VCQ600-PB Quadro 600 . its a workstation card that is meant for this kind of work far as i can tell. its supported by auto cad 10 and 11.

as for rest of the system a quad and 8 gigs should be fine. i do very basic stuff with auto cad on my system and it dose it without a hick up. i did have a C2D and that wasn't a problem ether. 1 thing i like to say is if possible have a small raid 0 for faster load times but that isn't necessary.

that makes sense.
what would be two smaller drives that would be ideal for raid?

any drives would work. right now im using 2 WD aaks blue drives in a raid 0 and love them. using a single platter 320g or 500g drive would be best. they would have a higher bit density on the disk so that would allow for better read/write speed. usualy if you have a raid0 its good practice to have a large hard drive (750gigs or bigger) so you can back the raid up just in case a drive fails.

ether of these would do:
