Cooler Master Thermal Compound

Thread Starter
Hey all, I recently bought a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus and it came with some thermal compound in the box.

I was wondering if that thermal compound is fine to use as it is, rather than buying a different brand/type.

Also, does anyone have any advice about applying it to the HDC (Heatpipe Direct Contact) design of the 212+?

Thanks!

Almost everyone here will say that TIM is crap.

Get some AS5 for that.

As for applying it, I only use the plastic bag method.

Put a pea size on the middle of the CPU, and with a plastic bag, cover your finger and spread it out until it covers everything. Don't worry about it looking perfect, just make sure there are no major lumps on it.
4-year build.

'TIM'?

Is it really that bad? I'm not looking to overclock or anything like that, it'd just be a bit of a hastle to go out of my way and buy something else.

As for applying, I've heard you should use a couple blobs on either side to smooth into the grooves where it touches the CPU, is that accurate at all?

That stuff is garbage. I use g-751 sold on newegg by masscool. Expensive as can be but amazing stuff. No cure, fairly easy to spread and ranks in the very top of paste tests. Even higher than the almighty as5.

Pros: some of the best stuff
Con: you get half as much as you would expect in a tube for a slightly higher price.

It's worth it. Applied on my 5770 and dropped load by 6*C. CPU fell by another 6*C coming from CM 212 paste

Unfortunately the shipping on Newegg is $10 for a $6 dollar item (the g-751) so I think that's out.

There's 1 computer store that's easy to get to and carries Arctic Silver (that's all they carry) so I might just have to go with that.

Is it possible to apply the supplied thermal compound and if that doesn't work out, get the Arctic Silver?

Also, what's the best way to remove it? I have to take my old stock heatsink off and I assume there'll be something there.

Yea, you'll be fine for now. Better paste might drop your temps a few degrees but it's honestly nothing really mind blowing.

I use q-tips and isopropyl alcohol to remove paste. I find it works well.

+1. This is a great method, however I found that cofee filters work better in the beginning. Use a few to wipe most of the paste off before the q-tips. The surface of the filters will pull most of the paste right off but is gentle and will not scratch unless you use mind numbing force.

Also not sure where you are looking at getting as5 from, but on the egg the g-751 is $7 shipped where the as5 is $10 shipped.

Do note, the as5 has nearly double in the tube but needs to cure, tad harder to spread and ranks lower than the g-751
