I'm going to run 3x 23.6"s at 5760x1080 with TrackIR. I'm building a 2600K system in a Silverstone FT03. For cooling I'm going to take advantage of the bottom 2x 80mm fans below the GPUs and also use the 90mm bracket that blows right onto the GPUs. This fall I'll spend another $800 on watercooling and mount 2x 360 rads on the back with cpu/gpu blocks. Of course, BD and Ivy will be here along with 7 series so I'll spend all my money on upgrading and not be able to afford water cooling yet again.
ArmA 2 looks to be a blast along with any of the current games. The last game I've played is Battlefield 2 so I'm in for a treat!
I'm going to see if a NH-D14 works with a fan removed so I can keep the angled CPU fan from the chassis to pull in cold air. I'm also buying two sets of fans, one quiet and one really loud for the 80mms so if I end up overheating I'll gouge my ears out and live with it.
I'm going for the ASUS 6970's with the metal casing to help keep things cool. I can't see using an aftermarket heatsink since I really need top exhaust to keep the heat out of the case. If they die from 100+C heat I'll RMA them and beg my wife to let me spend $$ on WCing.
If the 6990s come before I build in the first week of Feb I'll most likely splurge to get a set. Returning the 6970's would suck due to restocking fee. It's $750 or so for two 6970s, two 6990s would be $1,400 (@ $700 a card) raising my build to a cool $4k.
They say anything over $2,500 is supercomputer Ferrari territory so don't know what $3.5 would be on all air (not counting monitors), maybe retarded. The case does look like a trashcan, throwing my money away.
The more I think about it, the more I see the 6990 being perfect in a p67 ITX build in a SG07. I'd love to go ITX but by my build time I doubt we'll see the 6990 and a p67 ITX board. I'm still waiting for the MST HUBs promised to us.
On another note I did manage to get the Sempron up to 2.4GHZ on the stock cooler. It's so retro doing pencil mods and DIP switches.
