If you as a developer want commercial vendor support a la Nvidia to Linux etc-you need a large enough user-base to be relevant.
The number of competent Linux users willing to run Gentoo or Arch or LFS and get their hands dirty in config files etc--is NOT relevant from a commercial vendor perspective. Like it or not, that is how it is. Most people just want to use their machine without having to study READ-ME.html through Vim or Nano and then edit xorg.conf in order to fix their disply server.
I've gone back to W7 full-time, from being an Arch user full-time, as my hardware is supported. In Linux there's ZERO support for 6000-series Radeon, and even then functions of my mouse don't work...and my nice soundcard has none of the feature I paid for.
