5850 CF vs 6870 CF?

Thread Starter
Alright so I have an XFX 5850 right now. Would doing a 6870 CF give me a higher performance than a 5850 CF, or would the difference be negligible? I've read some bad things about 5850 CF but I don't really know the details.

well i remember reading that 6*** series scale much better than previous generations in CF; couple that with the benchmarks that show 6870's on par, or slightly better than a 5850

but my suggestion is to just grab another 5850, its not worth investing in two 6870's when u can just pick up another 5850 on the cheap. you won't even notice a difference since CF with any of those cards are more than enough

6870 Crossfire wins. But I recommend just getting another 5850 as it is far cheaper.

1 6950 would probably be very good performance and price, especially if you unload your 5850.

The reason I want to crossfire is that I just played Crysis and I'm going to play Warhead next. I'm also interested in playing Metro 2033. Ideally I want to run these games with the highest possible settings and fps. Looking at the benchmarks, a 6870 CF performs pretty well on both with great avg fps.

How would a 6970 do on either of these titles? And I know that no specs are out yet, but I would want to use this setup for future games like Crysis 2 and The Witcher 2.

Well the 6870 handles Crysis, Warhead and Metro 2033 impeccably even at the highest settings with the 1080p resolutions.

Obviously the 6970 crossfire does better, but the 6970 is really meant for multiple monitor setups. A 6970 alone performs more poorly than a 6870 Crossfire, but gives you more room for future upgrades.

So it comes down to this; if you have a single monitor, 6870 CF is well enough, if you have multiple monitors, go with the 6970 (CF).

I had both setups you mentioned, dual 5850s and dual 6870s. I suggest you get the most powerful card you can afford and go from there.
