Phenom II temperature

Thread Starter
well, I've been doing some heavy render work on my sig rig and the cpu has been getting up to a maximum of 65c just wondering if it is safe to run my cpu for prolonged periods of time at this temperature as the amd site says that the max temp for this cpu is 62c

Everybody I've spoken to has said to not let it get too far above 55c for prolonged periods of time. I personally wouldnt let mine get that hot, mine doesnt go over 50c as it is. But we have different cooling systems and the ambient temperature here is lower..

Edit: What cooler are you using on your CPU? Stock?

thanks for the quick reply, yes I'm using stock (i recently undusted it), no overclock at all, and it's under-volted, to keep it under 62c i have to render only on 2 cores which halfs the speed of the process . my ambients i think are around 25c.

Can you change the thermal grease? If its the stock cooler it may have gone hard an crappy. Up to 60c is fine people just say 55c when overclocking as phenoms like cold for stability but more then 62c for long periods is not good.

I strongly suggest getting a better cooler for your CPU if at all possible. Or even a reseat of your current one might help. My older system is in a Cm-690..how many fans do you have in yours? perhaps airflow is insufficient?

yeah I haven't changed the thermal grease yet but i have re seated the hsf, I've been putting off getting a new HSF for a while though. do you think this would be the best option? new hsf + overhaul my case fans?

EDIT: i have 1 120mm top exhaust, 1x 120mm rear exhaust, 2x 80mm side intakes, and 1x 120mm front intake

my main concern with hsf's is can it be mounted blowing front to back on the AM3 socket as i don't want it to pull hot air from the gpu to cool the cpu.

Yes most HSF do run front to back. Depending on your budget, I'd recommend a Scythe Mugen II ($38.00) and rated number 3 http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...&limitstart=15 I say #3 because they don't have the #1 Noctua available for these tests. The Noctua is hands down the best air cooler (84-$89.00) and is VERY tall and requires a full tower to fit. The Mugen fits in mid tower cases and is half the price, out performs the hyper 212 (just ask some other 1090T owners that have a 212) and in extreme cases with push/pull fans and a shroud handles my 6 core 1090T at 4013 with 1.4v with a max of 52c under load with 24 hrs of prime95.

ye there we go, one you take of hsf, you need new thermal paste. if you are not into oc'ing or anything like extreme, just get something like viper nano or if you render for long periods of time, get something like h-50.
