HD 6950 810/1250 MHz, Shader Unlock, 1.175V GPU, 1620/2500 CCC Limits

Step by step guide to an HD 6950 with:

810 MHz Factory GPU Overclock at stock HD 6970 voltage ( 1.100V + 0.075V )
1250 MHz DDR at stock HD 6950 voltage and timings
1620 MHz GPU Catalyst Control Center Overdrive limits
2500 MHz DDR Catalyst Control Center Overdrive limits
1536 unified shaders

Do not use or type the quotation marks

1. With your computer off make sure the bios switch is set to the "1" position, the position furthest from the CrossFireX bridge connections

2. Download this file, right-click it and select "Extract All..." to "C:\\" or to wherever your Windows root directory is

3. If you have CrossFireX, disable it now

4. Click the Windows Start Menu button

5. Type "cmd" and press CTRL+Shift+Enter

6. A black window will appear, this is the Windows command prompt

7. Type "cd \\hd6950flash" in the command prompt and press Enter

8. Type "atiwinflash -unlockrom 0" in the command prompt and press Enter

9. A progress bar will appear and disappear

10. Type "atiwinflash -f -p 0 bios.bin" in the command prompt and press Enter

11. A progress bar will appear and disappear

12. A window verifying the bios flash will appear, click "OK"

13. A window asking to reboot will appear
13a. If you have an HD 6950 CrossFireX setup click "No" and continue to step 14
13b. If you have a single HD 6950 click "Yes" and continue to step 20

14. Type "atiwinflash -unlockrom 1" in the command prompt and press Enter

15. A progress bar will appear and disappear

16. Type "atiwinflash -f -p 1 bios.bin" in the command prompt and press Enter

17. A progress bar will appear and disappear

18. A window verifying the bios flash will appear, click "OK"

19. A window asking to reboot will appear, click "Yes"

20. After the computer reboots you might see a window saying you need to install video card drivers, reboot again

21. Open the "C:\\hd6950flash\\SmartDoc674" folder

22. Launch the "setup" application to install Asus SmartDoctor, follow the on screen instructions

23. After the computer reboots, launch Asus SmartDoctor

24. Under Asus SmartDoctor's settings, check the "Overclocking range enhancement" option

25. Click "OK"

26. Exit Asus SmartDoctor

27. Uninstall Asus SmartDoctor

28. Launch Catalyst Control Center

You should now have a default GPU clock of 810 MHz and a default Memory clock of 1250 MHz. Your OverDrive limits should now be 1620 for the GPU and 2500 for the Memory. Your GPU voltage will now be 1.175V, the memory should stay at the HD 6950 factory voltage/timing defaults. You don't need any software other than Catalyst Control Center to overclock now.

I like to set my OverDrive to 880 GPU, 1250 Memory, and 12% Power Control.

I think this is old news... people have been pushing over 1ghz core and over 1500+ on memory with voltage control.

Just wanted to post a step by step guide with a link to everything needed, that's all.

Using this method my CrossFireX 8x/8x, 880/1250MHz setup hits P9318 on 3DMark 11.

is this to flash it to a 6970? or just to unlock shaders?
What are you using to get the increased vcore? Is that from Smart Doctor or is that from a BIOS you made yourself using RBE?

I ask because I do have my cards flashed to 6950+shader unlock so maybe I can skip that part already.

Also +rep because putting this stuff all in one place is worth a lot more than having it scattered everywhere, and because Afterburner doesn't work for **** with unlocked or flashed 6950s in CF.

Hm, unfortunately this didn't work for me. But I think that's because my Sapphire cards are allergic to the Asus BIOS, because I got driver and screen crashes after I flashed to that BIOS, which didn't do anything much to my stock clocks but increased my core voltage. According to the guy who made Afterburner, Sapphire cards use different voltage controller chipset, at least compared with the MSI card.

Either that or one of my cards is just too weak to handle the increased core voltage.

Who knows. All I know is that AMD's CCC limit is ******* dumb.

The bios has unlocked unified shaders, GPU voltage of 1.175, and 810MHz default GPU clock. It does not use the HD 6970 memory voltages or timings.

Yes, bios was modded using RBE. Sorry to hear about your card not working with the this modded Asus bios, it's the only way I know of letting SmartDoctor do its thing.

I'm gonna try this.

I got the Asus BIOS from TPU and modded it to have unlocked shaders but Asus SmartDoctor doesn't detect it as an Asus GPU.

Edit: So I got the SD from your link and it recognized my GPU. I did the overclock enhancement for CCC and now I don't see PowerTune, but the clocks are at 1620/2500 now.

Yeah, you can't get Asus SD to work just by downloading an Asus BIOS from TPU. The one the OP created, however, does allow SD to work. Or is the the version of SD that is different? Also, with Powertune not an option, how does it interact with that? Because PT might be throttling clocks if it's hidden and set to 0%.

Also, can you explain what exactly, and how exactly, you did what you did in RBE to change the voltages? It seems there are two options - enter the values in the Powerplay thing or choose the option to "adjust voltage parameters" or something. Maybe if I can adjust the voltages on my Sapphire BIOS myself, I can use Afterburner with unlocked OC function to push the clocks. Afterburner is buggy with unlocked OC mode in CF, but the main problem with it has been that it only adjusts voltages on one card.

I just don't understand why every card manufacturer doesn't have this feature to lift the limits. So annoying to be limited by this garbage 40mhz lame limit AMD created.

Nor do I understand why we have Powertune to begin with. I have a 1k watt PSU, why the hell do I need that imposed on me?
