Do We Need the Intel Matrix Storage Controller?

I've been reading up on it and can't really find the right answer. I have it installed but disabled and I'm running OK on the intel ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller. So my question is, on my sig MB can I delete the intel matrix storage controller completely? Is it just a alternate controller in case the OS doesn't offer a AHCI controller, or does it control other hardware too? Everything's working without it but...

If you're talking about "Intel Matrix Storage Manager", then I recommend getting rid of it because it's actually very out-dated. The latest version of it goes by the new name "Intel Rapid Storage Technology", which is 10.1.0.1008. I'm guessing that you have version 8.9.0.1023.

Here's 10.1.0.1008: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=19607

I've been taught that proper TRIM support didn't begin until version 9.6 of Intel's Rapid Storage Technology driver, and so this is one reason why I am recommending the latest version.

It's not that using Intel's Matrix Storage Manager is bad or that using the generic Microsoft driver that comes with Windows is bad, but it's just that if I've been told the correct information, then it sounds like the best TRIM support (that is, for Intel systems) is provided by Intel's Rapid Storage Technology driver.

OK, thanks TC. I do have the out dated 8.9.0.1023 windoz version. I clicked Update and Look on internet, as I heard about the newer version while reading up on SSDs before buying, but thought I had the newest version when it came back, You have the newest driver.
Again thanks for the heads up +1 REP.

You're quite welcome!

What's worse is that I just noticed ASUS is still offering 8.9.0.1023 for the P6TD Deluxe as though it's the latest version! I mean, they should really be offering at least version 9.6.0.1014 considering that this is a Socket 1366 board instead of some Socket 775 board. I mean, I think that they really need to get with the program here! smile.gif

So I'm saying that you were stuck with 8.9.0.1023 by either the driver CD that comes with the P6TD Deluxe, or by their website. But y'know, it's not that bad because 8.9.0.1023 is actually a little bit better than the generic "msahci" driver that comes with Windows 7!
