This is a funny poll because, although I do not own many mouse pads, I have been using a 4HD for the last year, I just received an Xtrac Hybrid today, and I also tried a QcK some months ago. All three pads have tracked perfectly well on my Steelseries Xai, so I don't really have much more to say in that regard. I haven't used the Hybrid extensively, but I can give you my thoughts:

I didn't care for the QcK. I really just bought it as an experiment because I've been using hard pads for the last decade or so, and I've grown attached to their slickness and smoothness. To use a big soft pad effectively I'd have to completely redefine how I play, everything from the grip to the positioning of my wrist on the desk to the sensitivity I use would have to change, and I just didn't want to do that, so the QcK went back. It wasn't anything special in my eyes: a typical large cloth pad. Considerably less slick than a hard pad and designed for a low sensitivity playstyle.

I've used the 4HD for quite a while and it's starting to wear down (a common problem on hard pads). It's a little small, so I might advise getting the 9HD instead which is the same pad just larger. Honestly, it's just a good all around pad. It's lightly textured quite slick, and much more durable than something like a Ratpad. If you've used something like a funcpad or eXactMat, it's a lot like a mixture of the rough and smooth sides. I liked it a lot, and I considered getting another one, but rather decided to change it up and get the Xtrac (which I like to do occasionally).

The Hybrid comes rolled up in a tube. This sucks for two reasons: much like the QcK, it stinks really bad, most likely due to the freshness of the rubber backing. That QcK stunk for about two weeks after getting it, a real nasty rubber smell that stuck to your hand and mouse after using it. Also like the QcK, it retains some of the curl of the tube. At this point, I have barely used it because it's still very curled up. I've got a couple of heavy textbooks sitting on top of it right now to smooth it out.

From the little bit of time I spent with it, it seemed quite slick definitely on par with the 4HD and much slicker than the QcK. It's also much quieter than a hard pad due to the whole hybrid thing. The surface is very soft, but yet is distinctly different from the QcK. It really does feel like a 50/50 split between fabric and plastic. I'll use it more after I get the bastard flattened out and post my thoughts.

It was like a layer of fuzz/ plastic would wear off and coat your mouse feet. and third it started to seperate at the corners in about 3 months. I got it for free so I was not too mad but still it sucked.

Is a good mouse pad really necessary? I'm using this "Toronto Public Library" mouse pad from the 7th grade.

This. Best mousepad I've ever used.

I have the Medium sized Speed edition.

Thanks for the in depth insight +rep.

It sounds as though I probably won't be too happy with a hard surface from what I've read here and some other reviews elsewhere. Not to mention I've only gamed FPS on consoles (I know I know) so I'm having to relearn everything on a G13 and soon to be G700. From what I've gathered cloth is the way to go for lower sensitivity. Not to mention I don't think I could get used to having to control the mouse more... uhh stringently(?) with a hard surface due to the speed.

I dunno though lol.. it sounds like I'll either end up with the Qck heavy or the Goliathus.

You probably haven't much experience with mouse pads and seem likely not very picky but in any case, I recommend a compromise between soft and hard.

It's called the ARTISAN HIEN KAI.g3 (Hard or Soft both have identical surface, Soft is just ever so slightly more 'spongy' density, doesn't make much if any diff).

I love both FPS and RTS and I was highly considering the Sphex. Why is it good for those game genres?
I have xtrac ripper xxl and Razer Goliaths omega speed.

Edit: Derp, I forgot to mention I like soft pads, well cause they are soft. and make less noise and feel nice to the mouse. But they get cought on my wrist too much thats why I have a huge one now that hangs off the table so I cant get my wrist caught on it. I have owned the razer eXact mat before, but I didn't like how the feet picked up ever piece of dust to make the pad feel like sand paper.
How is the sphex with sound, comfort(surface and with mouse), and durability?
