Rig randomly turning off

Thread Starter
As said in the title my sig rig is randomly switching off (full on power off, no shutting down screen), it started about 12 hours ago and has happened 3 times now. It doesn't seem to be anything to do with load (ran linx for an hour and a half and have played BC2 for ~4 hours today and it nothing unusual happened during either), it only seems to occur when I'm not doing anything intensive (twice while on the desktop, once while web browsing).

I have absolutely no idea what it is as that it doesn't appear to occur because of variations in load, and because shutting off is the only ill-effect I'm getting currently. Some help as to pinpointing the issue would be appreciated

might be ur overclocking or ur custom bios flash?

is it a bluescreen and restart,

or a pure shut off.

If the pc was unchanged and fine up to this fault, my guess ATM is that ur PSU is faulty and cant supplie the required load.

The main thing that is making me suspect it isn't is that a) I'd run linx for 50 runs, and played BC2 for ~4 hours and there was no crash and b) I'd flashed the rampage BIOS over 2 years ago. It has run perfectly fine for me and I don't see how it would **** up now.

EDIT pure shutoff, no blue screen, just straight power off. I was thinking the PSU for a little while too but the voltages in HWmonitor weren't weird at all, they were very consistent even under load. The thing about the PSU is if it was it it'd shut off under load, which it didn't.

Is the PSU warmer or got more fan noise then normal

.. just to confirm, the pc doesnt restart?

First things first:

Run a Memtest+.

the problem for me is that a system fault would generally just restart, the only way for the pc to power off is for the motherboard to release the hold on the power unit, but yeh, ive never heard of the that before.

I would say the power unit is right on the limit and then bailing out, but a 850W is easily enough

I did a few months back, everything was good (my old sticks would cause BSOD's with the new ones so I tested it with them, took them out and tested them again and they were good). Ram doesn't degrade does it?!?

No, it really shouldn't. But I would run it again now anyway.
Memory is responsible for most of the random shutoffs/restarts. I would start there. If all your sticks pass, we'll go from there.
