Q8400 worth upgrading to Q9650.

Thread Starter
atm got a Q8400 stable at 3.7 running with a gtx 570. Worth upgrading to a Q9650 E0, apperantly does 4.0@ 1.29v. What do Q9650's and Q8400's go for these days.

Thnx

I have no idea about the pricing, but Q9650 has higher cache and OC potential and is a far superior chip compared to Q8xxx ones.

There will be a slight noticeable difference, but for the price you are going to pay for the chip, you are better off getting a used i7 or cheap sandy bridge.

Q8400 worth about $100 while a Q9650 is worth about $200.

A q8400 goes for around 110.00 used and the q9650 around 220.00 used.

The q 9650 is a big jump and worth it if you don't plan to upgrade your motherboard for another year to a new socket.

Planning on upgrading next year or so, but not willing to spend 800-1000$ now on cpu, mb and memmory. I was thinking like 200-220 for the Q9650, and selling the old 8400.

The guy is asking 250$, worth it?

Well, I don't think it's worth it imho... If I were going to put money in, I'd go ahead and upgrade to 2500k, mobo, ram for ~400$ US.

what about your sig rig?

Get the q9650, 250 is a bit high for it, since you can get a q9550 for 140 or so.

For $250 nope, for $150 yes, save your money

To reframe your question: "Is spending ~$150 [after you sell your Q8400] worth an 10-15% performance increase at best in games?"

I don't think it is.

Now if you can cut your costs to less than $100 by finding a Q9550 at the right price to do the same 10-15%, then I'd reconsider.
