I need advice :)

Thread Starter
I am currently in college and about to have some spare cash.
I believe its past time for me to get a laptop lol

i need something fairly cheap
needs minimum 4g ram (to run virtual machines)
needs to be able to do common tasks and it will be used for VERY small amounts of gaming something to do between classes

Ive looked around and i believe this will fit the bill
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220970
if you guys got any advice or suggestions please let me now

uses are going to be roughly
75% typeing word doc's and web surfing
20% Virtual machines
5% games

Thanks for your time guys smile.gif

This one has a slightly smaller hard drive, but a nice price tag. Really if your not going to be doing any hard core things your in the right direction, anyone of these will do.

I would advise against that one, and get a bigger screen. I have that screen on my laptop and trust me, 768 is terrible for web surfing and typing word docs, I sorta want a high resolution screen.

its all a matter of preference, what might not work for some, will work for others =)

do you need an optical drive? ive seen some powerful notebooks that might fit the bill that lack an optical drive

Nothing in particular to add since it's been a few years since I had to research laptops, but you can't go wrong with an Asus. When mine was new, even the instructors at my school were impressed with the specs vs price. Even now it's able to compete with plenty of newer models.

I used to have a giant 17-inch 'gaming' notebook that I tried to use for work and school. It worked out poorly. It was way too heavy and the battery life was nonexistent, and for the money I paid for it I could have had a top-of-the-line desktop system with no corners cut.

This time around, I choose to split the difference between a fully-featured notebook and a 'netbook.' I chose the Asus UL30Vt, a 13.3-inch notebook, and I couldn't be happier. It's got everything that I need in a portable computer for school and work, and it can play old-ish Steam games without a problem. The new version is the Asus UL30Jc, which is actually a step up because it includes an optical drive.

Both are available at Amazon.com, with the [ame=http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-U30JC-B1-13-3-Inch-Laptop-Silver/dp/tech-data/B003UNF1B2/ref=de_a_smtd]UL30Jc[/ame] starting at about $650.
