need help! worried about overclocking!

Thread Starter
hello
First i wanna say that im a rookie when it comes to overclocking, i did alot of research lately and read through the forums.
So i bought a new system a couple of days ago mainly for gaming

i7 950 @ stock, now
580gtx sli
12gb corsair ram
asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard
corsair 1000w psu
corsair h70 cooler
coolermaster hafx case
windows 7 64bit

my concern is that my cpu isn´t fast enough at stock speeds to get all out of my gpus. so i did a overclock yesterday, i increased the bclk from 133 to 170 for the first step, changed the ram timings(9-9-9-24) and upped the cpu voltage to 1.25 and basically left the rest at auto.
When i saved it immediately said overclocking failed at the boot, then when I was in the "starting windows" screen i got a bsod wich was too fast to see and after that it kept rebooting over and over again, i even tried to load the default bios settings. I did a memory test and there was nothing wrong with that so i decided to reinstall windows and everything worked again.

i really want to oc my cpu to get the most out of the games but now im worried that the same thing will happen again. What do you guys suggest? What was the reason it kept BSODing over and over? help would be really appreciated!
btw i use xmp right now

Can you print out your BIOS settings? CPU/RAM multipliers and voltages would be very helpful.

How fast do you want to go? With an H70, you could easily hit 4.0GHz with that chip, so let's shoot for that.

Turn off the AI tuner or set that to manual, whatever it is.
That should allow you to set the CPU ratio. You want to set it to 21x.

Turn off SpeedStep and Turbo Mode.
Set the BCLK to 191.
Set your CPU Voltage to 1.2500.

Give that a shot.

There is always a chance to BSOD when you're overclocking . I wouldn't let it get to you, it's completely normal. The settings I recommended is a relatively conservative overclock, so I anticipate that it will be stable. Of course every chip is different, so we can test for stability after you get that up and running.

So i bought a new system a couple of days ago mainly for gaming.

You made a big mistake and should have consulted here first. You should have bough a sandy bridge 2500k cpu,as you don't need hyper threading and it would have been cheaper and smarter to buy the latest tech, instead of 2 year old tech.

That's not really true.

First of all, the 1366 socket is still a very good socket. It has pros and cons when compared to the newer 1155.

Secondly, you don't know what he's using his rig for. You don't know if he's going to be utilizing hyper-threading or not.

Lastly, there really is no reason to try and make him feel upset about his purchase.

OP: Please don't pay any mind to this post. Your new system is a beast and you're going to love it. Now let's get you up and running with a nice high clock.
