Who said anything about "being on the phone all day" - I use my phone for a lot more then just phone calls. I work, I have a pretty good job. A job that requires me to have a smartphone that lasts more then 3 hours.

A ULV 1.6Ghz Quad-Core Sandy Bridge would still consume MUCH more power. You are looking at a TDP of over 20w. A dual-core Cortex-A9 have a TDP of under 2w.

Handhelds are out of the question then, but what about Tablets? The mobile Nehalem-based(i7-720QM) quads are rated @ 35-45w on the 45nm process in laptops, so it should be possible for Intel to do this @ 22nm w/power and clock gating for a 10.1-inch tablet.

If you're a businessmen and need a powerful hardcore on to go, Tegra 3 1.5ghz Quad will be coming in handy. Time is very important, cuz it can cause them money..

I don't see Tegra 3 will be used for regular consumer anytime soon, until ipad 7 comes out

ARM announced their quad-core Cortex-A15 last fall and that is rated up to 2.5GHz. It is much easier to build a power-efficent design and scale up rather than trim down a CPU.

Intel is looking to use their upcoming "Cedar Trail" Atom line for tablets.

This is changing slowly.... Software using 2 cores is becoming more common. i.e. MS Office can use multiple cores. Most FPS use at least 2 cores now.

I can see something like this in future Motorola Atrix variants. They can even disable 2 cores until it's plugged into a dock.

It seems that this thread has gotten into the same old debate about software vs hardware development and who should play 'catch-up' or 'slow-down.' You can blame either side for not squeezing every drop of efficiency out what they have. Problem is that after so much tweaking performance gains start to knee off and further improvement isn't financially practical. We now know that the chicken came first, but we have to determine which is the chicken and which is the egg
