installed GT AP-15's in push/pull - now have whirring noise.

Thread Starter
I installed 4 Gentle Typhoon fans in a push/pull config on my radiator inside my Lian Li A71F case. I installed the 2 push fans to a y-splitter that connects to channel 1 on my fan controller and the 2 pull fans to a y-splitter that connects to channel 2 on my fan controller.

Even when I get the RPM's as close as I can on the Lamptron FC5 fan controller I hear a weird whirring noise. I had to use a dremel and notch the fan tunnels so I could mount them with regular screws but I don't think that's it. I read that the fans must all run in unison. What do you guys think would be causing this slight whirring noise?

It seems like it gets worse if I have the fans running at different speeds (push vs pull).

The problem I'm having is just like this guys problem:

I'm wondering if I should not be using the y-splitter but hooking each fan directly to a controller on my fan controller. I'm wondering if the fans have a difference in rpms.

It would be worth doing this to see if it is a speed thing. Try adjusting the fan speeds individually and see what happens to the noise. It might be the air flow, or some resonance due to the motors.

I will try this tonight, luckily I have a 4 channel fan controller. You would think this grade of fan (gt-ap15) would all work at the same rpm's though.

When I had 2 stock pull fans only (with no fan controller) I never had any whirring noises. It was only when I put these 4 GT-15's in.

I also get a 'whirring' noise from my push/pull hyper 212+ that uses identical stock fans driven from a pwm Y splitter. Seems to me that it's a harmonic produced by the fans working in unison. Though a bit noisy, it's not a problem nor a big deal IMO.

I'm wondering if these would help

http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/nois120mifan.html

Currently I'm using rubber washers, if I use this instead it may act more like a semi shroud and eliminate the noise. What do you think?

Do you have a shroud after the push fan?

I don't have any shrouds. I just have a rad, 4 gt ap-15's, and 4 rubber washers.

I had to dremel a notch in the gt "tunnels" so I could fit screws on them. I'm wondering if there is a better way so that I didn't have to dremel.
