tried an experimaent with my much abused 955c3

When i got the chip it went from the box to me beating the hell out of it.Never once tried to find what it would run at stock volts because i knew where i wanted to be '4.0 +' so it has always had 1.475 to 1.55 ( i got 4.1 stable at 1.55)
So just for grins i turned everything back down to stock, set my NB to 2600 at 1.375v and my ram at 2.0v and left it at the factory setting of 1.40.Well to my surprise i am at 3.82 with the stock voltage and just the settings i mentioned above. After running Prime for 12hours and OCC for 2 andtemps in the low 40's i
ran some benchmarks and while there is a difference between 4.0 and 3.82 not as big a gap as i first thought.
Played a few games FarCry 2,Fallout 2, Doom 3,Crysis and could not see or feel any lag in the two settings.I am running and H70 with a push/pull with a pair of Sytche UK 3k's and a 120mm shroed on the intake which pulls air from the outside into my CM 690II..I have 2 huge exhaust fans at the top and the most i got up to with the 1.55v was 52-53c and 4.0 was 48-51c..this set up is 38-42c.
Just curious what others have got at stock volts and damn i feel like a real dolt to have not tried this sooner.Just looking for some feedback its amazing how much more i need to get a stable 4.0

Thanks

Everything I've seen and experienced seems to indicate that 3.8 is very easy and 3.9-4.0 and higher is just not worth the trouble for most people. My temps are never a problem and weren't when I went higher than 3.8, but stability is just really hard to get. It's cool you got it that high, but all the tweaks involved just seemed like a bother to me for the small amount of performance gain.
But I guess that's what this forum is all about.
edit, my H50 has 2 UK's as well and I found a real NEED for a decent fan controller.

C3 is mostly like my 1055T, and as one, mine has the same issues.

On 1.3V I can crank up the jiggahurtz up to 3.65, which is still 0.025V under stock (that leaves headroom for 3.75GHz under stock volts).

And the difference between running 3.75GHz on stock volts or 4GHz at 1.45V is, generally speaking, from 39ºC load to 49ºC load. And there isn't any real-world performance gain.

This Phenoms have gimmicky overclock man

It is odd.Since i never really spent any time trying to see how few volts it would take to run any OC it was always right foot to the floor lets boogie.

Now i find it interesting how little volts it takes to run 3.8ghz and the huge leap in voltage it takes to get to 4.0/4.1 of curse if i had started out like everyone else i would have had a clue. The way i did it was read read read and then like i said right foot the floor, had to have 4.0

Thats the biggest reason i went with the H70 and a pair of hovercraft.

My 955be reaches 3.8ghz very easily, dont have to change vcore or anything just changing the muti to 18 is enough. I was surprised when I had obtained 4.1Ghz stable with just 1.4v. I thought it would take much more but it didnt. Just wish I had better 2000mhz rams. Then the total oc experience would have been spactacular.

I have to make a choice now stay at 3.82 at 1.38 or once again crank er back up to 4.0/4.1 with a ton more heat and voltage. The H70 and helicopters trapped within the case now seem a bit of overkill..if i open one of my windows under blend Prime 64bit it never goes over 36c..idles 24/25c..
Maybe ill stop beating the crap out of it until Bulldozer comes out..i was going to do a whole new build then anyway. After running bench's the difference is so much less than i thought.I can get stable at 3.9 at 1.475..that's still not to warm.
Went about this whole process backwards.

so someone chime in..im new to the PC world...i like the idea of full bore wide open 4.1..but i was green as grass to PC's until a few years ago.Learned enough about OC to get a 9750 up to 3ghz..that took alot of work.
Now i just have to decide.........

Chime in? What exactly is the question?

The difference between 3.8 and 4.1 isn't worth the heat or voltage for just basically bragging rights. Run it where it's comfortable 24/7, and save a ramped up 4.1 profile for when/if you bench at all.
