The journey to 4.2 GHZ / AMD 955

Thread Starter
Hi guys, as the title implicates, Im just OCing my AMD 955 C3

For now my CPU runs at 4,1 Ghz @ 1.407 Vcore. and 55°C Temp.
Running Prime95 at the moment.

I have a questions here :

1. Altohugh I set my Vcore at 1.407 , CPU-Z shows one fluctuating value
of 1.43 - 1.45 Vcore . Why is that so and which value is to trust, the one I set in the motherboard or the one CPU-Z shows ?.

2. What do you think, is 4.1 Ghz good for an 955BE ? Im kind of new to OC.

3. What Vcore is acceptable for a 24/7 setup ?

Greetings, Sephiroth

1.50v is the max safe voltage and the thermal limit is 62 C, IIRC.

4.1 GHz is great for a 955, my old chip wouldn't go past 3.8 GHz. If it's stable and your temps are in check, then I wouldn't try to push it any further than 4.1.

Nah. You can go all the way up to 1.55 as long as the cooler you have can handle it. Phenom II chips usually stop scaling on air at 1.55 or 1.56.

I'm running 4.2GHz 24/7 w/ 1.55Vcore set in bios ~1.536Vcore in windows. Never go over 54C with my venomous X

If youre already hitting 55C with 1.4Vcore, you might wanna consider investing in a new cooler.

Well, The Cooler is a CM Hyper plus 212 . I just bought it last week, so I think it is alright, dont want to buy a new cooler just for 100 Mhz extra OCing.

I will maybe look hows the Vcore / Temp doing at 4,2 Ghz. But If I consider, that I had to raise the VCore by 0.1 just to get from from 4.0 to 4.1. Ghz...It wont go much further anyways.

I'd stay where you are if you can keep the temps under control. Otherwise, back it down to 4.0.

Oh, and welcome to OCN!

Yeah thank you ^^.

I think the temperature is "cool" the way it is. After 40 Min Priming it varies between 54 and 56°C. But to reach 4.2 Ghz...It seems magical to me, to OC 1Ghz / 4 Ghz with 1/4 Cores .

I found I could squeeze out another 2-300MHz with 1.58-1.6v but yeah, usually 1.55v is pretty safe with cool temps.

If you get a relatively leaky chip. Not all chips are the same. My 955 C2, 955 C3, and 1090T all hate over 1.56Vcore unless they have significantly colder temps.
