Help me understand!!

Thread Starter
I was looking to get another monitor. But i don't understand how the second monitor will be connected.
My current monitor is connected to Graphic card(Hawk 5770) using a DVI cable.

The second monitor is to be connected using a HDMI cable or do i need a Display port cable or both?
HAWK 5770 has only 1xDVi, 1xHDMI and 1X DP, unlike normal GPU which has 2xDVI, 1xHDMI and 1XDP..
I am not sure how to go about adding more than 1 monitor so please help me understand the basics here..

Thanks in advance..

You have 1xDVi, 1xHDMI and 1X DP

If the DVI is going to monitor one, you will need a second monitor that has an input that is HDMI or DP. To use a second monitor that has a DVI connection, you will need an adapter to go from HDMI to DVI.

you will need a monitor that will connect to the HDMI port or the DP port, one or the other. And the monitor you are using now will stay connected to the DVI port.

DVI = HDMI but a different connector essentially, Actually if I recall (and i could be wrong DVI > HDMI forget why so dont take it as fact.

DP was desiged to replace VGA, DVI and LVDS, while HDMI was designed to replace S-Video and standard AV component connections for HDTV's. Basically, DP was designed to communicate between your GPU and monitor, HDMI was designed for HDTV's. If you have the choice I would sugest using DP, it can run full bandwith on as long as 10ft of cable with better quality than HDMI. I am sure others can elaborate further, but basically, DP is better for connecting a GPU to a monitor.

Edit: Found this article http://en.community.dell.com/dell-bl.../19/46464.aspx

Hope that helps.

I think HDMI = DVI + audio.
