GTX 460 3rd party coolers?

Thread Starter
Got a GTX 460 running @

Clock: 885MHz
Shader: 1770MHz
Memory: 2175MHz (This is the DDR clock itk)

It is not stable over 900MHz, so i gave it some leeway and dropped the clock to 885, and the voltage is stock. The card itself is a Palit GTX 460 1GB "Sonic Overclocking Edition". Got it BNIB from Scan for about £160.

BUT, as my CPU is the bottleneck in my system ( a Dual core G6950 @ 4.2GHz), i want to max out my gain from the GPU.

Im getting max temps in Kombustor of about 76*c. My test is:

Renderpath: Direct3D11
-Benchmarking
1680x1050
-Fullscreen
16x CSAA
60000 ms test

I get a score of just over 7000, and the stock score was 5700.

Whats the best way of getting more juice from it? New cooler? or save up for a better cpu?

A few things.

If your CPU is your bottleneck, overclocking your GPU isn't going to help. There will be no way to "max out your gain" because the CPU will be holding everything back.

That said, it's really unlikely you're CPU limited in most games at 1080p or similar res. Some games (GTA 4, etc) yes, you are CPU limited. Edit: at 1680.. same story.

Also, at 76 C heat is not your problem. I'm not enough of an expert to help you troubleshoot, but heat isn't it. A better cooler isn't going to help. THese GPUs (all GPUs really) are fine and dandy until the high 80s low 90s.
