[solved] Internet access but browsers can't actually get pages

Thread Starter
So my friend is doing a study abroad in Germany this semester and is living in a dorm. She is able to connect with AIM and Skype, but IE and Chrome won't open any websites. Restarted, checked network adapter properties (DNS settings automatic). Not sure what to tell her. She's using Windows 7. Would appreciate any ideas on this.
Thanks

Try renewing the ip and if that doesn't work try resetting winsock

1.Hit start and type cmd

2.right click on the result and "run as admin"

3. type "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew"

4. if that doesn't work after the connection is reastablished try "netsh winsock reset catalog" and "netsh int ip reset reset.log hit"

That will reset all internet settings to default

In IE goto tools, internet options, connections, lan settings, and make sure the proxy checkbox isn't checked

Under the Internet Options>Connections>LAN settings make sure you don't have a proxy enabled.

If it was, then she may have some malware.

Bingo.

If she's using skype and AIM there at the same time TCP is handling sessions and has an ip address. There is no need to assign her a new IP or reset TCP.

If the issue is specifically her browsers then it sounds like an application layer issue.

Faced similar problem once. My solution was to find several DNS addresses from a cafe and try em out on my pc. The default dns provided by my service provider was crappy and it was causing the WEB BLACKOUT.

Sorry I was in class for a while. She just messaged me and said it turned out to be a firewall problem but she got it straightened out by reverting to default settings. Thanks for your help, everyone!
