hello I always come here to get help with my sudio questions and i always appreciate and respect the opinion of the many great people here who help. I am ashamed to say i am still a bit if a audio noob, i am slowly becoming a novice due to many great articles i try to read and catch up on but never the less i suck.

Anyways my old Altec lasing speakers i purchased with my first computer build and my sennheiser EH 150 headphones both mysteriously seemed to die and give out on me and need to find replacement soon.

I have a budget of $400 dollars tops, and even have nice sound card which still works ( ASUS XONAR d2X)

what is the best headphone you guys recommend for me? I use my headphones more than speakers so i would prefer to get better headphones than speakers if money allows?

what about speakers? i think with my budget i can prob get a nice pair of 2.1 sound quality speakers and buy a separate woofer.
I always see you guys recommend people "audioengine a5" to me a complete noob i always used to think that 2.1 sucked and 5.1 and above was better but foolishly ignored more important stuff and didn't know those were just channels that separate sound and thats it.
-What is so good about these speakers anyways?
-how do you deal with not having a sub woofer for these?
can you add woofers?
-can someone explain what details in specs makes you compare quality in speakers?
-is there any speakers you guys recommend for me?

even though i am a complete noob in audio to me audio is ne of the most important things about my computer from listening to music/ to watching movies and immersing myself in the action/to gaming and needed to listen to someone sneaking up on me lol.

Any recommendations for my budget on headphones/speakers is appreciated a lot.

Depends on the type of headphone sonic signature you looking for, each brand have kind associate with certain type of music better than other.
Classical, Jazz, Vocal probably suggest you look for the Sennheiser HD 650/600
Rock, metal Grado, Beyerdynamic DT 990/880
Denon D2000 should be another good can, AKG 701/702.
However, to get a nice headphone your Xonar D2X probably can power them but not to their fullest potential.

As for speakers you probably better off with 2.1 channel since music don't use 5.1 surround sound. I recommend you take a look at Energy Bookshelf Speakers got tons of good reviews on amazon, I got the standard Take 5 Energy speakers very decent and clear sounding to me at least.
