New PC bits arrive tomorrow..advice on silly questions appreciated

Hi all,

Right I have just ordered the core bits for my new rig and they will be here tomorrow. This will be the first time I have built an entire rig myself i have swapped bits out and in (RAM, GPU, HDD) etc but have no experience in installing a new motherboard, CPU or PSU, so are there any things I should look out for? tips!?

I have got a few questions on the CPU front I need to wait till next months pay before I invest in a decent air cooler and start to overclock but as I am massively impatient I want to play right away! Further to this I will be using whatever stock cooler Intel decide to provide me with, I have forgotten to order thermal paste so do retail CPU's come with some? If not it is a long ride to a computer shop

Also are there any tips on how to move my stuff from my current RAID0 hard drives to my new (Non-Raided) drive? is there any way at all I could move the stuff over without having to re-install all of it? (games etc?). The OS is also on this RAID so obviously i will have to re-install on the new HDD, but can I slave the new drive in this rig partition it, leaving one partition for the OS, transfer my files etc over then build new rig and install OS in the empty partition? Or this hoping for to much!?

Cheers for any help, and sorry for the long windedness!

No. You can copy neither an OS nor programs. they will have to be installed under the new OS. As for transferring files, you can transfer "data" (pictures, spreadsheets, etc.)
Get a grip. Be patient. You'll get it done when you have all the parts.

Your going to have to re-install, which would be recommended even if you didn't have to.

Unless you got a raid card there, you will not be able to drop the RAID 0 config into the new PC. This is because the raid itself is independent to the solution on that motherboard. Unless you match the same raid solution on the new motherboard, which is unlikely, it will not even recognize the drives as an array.

Pull your data off them, or set up the new PC apart from the old one if you can, and transfer everything over.

Cheers guys pretty much what i expected on the raid front. Was just wondering if there was any way to speed thing up a bit, short of slaving the drive, partitioning it, copy paste files/videos/music then pull it out pull all the other components out as the new stuff is going in the same case, put it all back together and install windows dumping the old Raided drives in the process.

As for when (if!) i get it all up and running i have been reading you should only run a new CPU/ Cooler for a few hours at a time when first installed? is this right? i cant really believe it myself seeing as if its all up and running it should be good to go, correct? i wont be stressing it to much for the first month anyway seeing as it will be on a stock cooler so no overclocking or benchmarking.

Which is best, Kog! Don't hurry into overclocking/modding right after you build a computer. Make sure your rig works under normal conditions for a good amount of time, then little by little, start doing your tweaks.

You're also talking about running on air, which is your choice! If you run on air, just remember that you will have more of a limit on how much you can overclock in the future without an aftermarket solution.

Did you have any ideas on what you wanted to do in the future with your rig?

Let us know. Congrats on getting your stuff. PICS!

Cheers Gigalisk!
I will indeed get a decent air cooler and more than likely a new monitor (Dont think I'll get the best out of my new kit at 1680x1050?!) once I get payed, again that is.

I have had my sig rig for a good few years now its done well but i just want to see what games look like with stuff actually turned up to high! and maybe with some of this new fangled Anti Aliasing I keep hearing about! Maybe i can find something more useful for it to do once its all up and running.

Pics could be a possibility, most likely of me slicing fingers off then of a grown man in tears after I have ruined several hundred quids worth of kit!

Well don't go spending money if you do not have to. Doing your research first is more important than anything, and will let you make a very informed decision!

I lol'd when you said "new fangled AA", when it's been around since 3D Graphics cards became popular. If you're thinking about a graphics card in the NVIDIA scope of things, the GTX 400/500 series may very well be up your alley in terms of price/performance value.

Let us know what u do!

Silly brits and your "quids". LOL

Yeah no worry's on the research front been planning / researching for ages, and yeah the "new fangled AA" bit was a bit tongue in cheek lol, i was more referring to actually being able to turn AA on now without dropping to like 15 FPS

I got all the parts today been transferring files and stuff over to my new drive just about to strip my old rig and start installing! although just looking at it im fairly sure the GTX 470 i've got is not going to fit in my case! drive bays are in the way, looks like i may need to borrow a dremel!

As for the parts ive gone with:-
i5 2500K
ASUS P8P67 Pro
4gb Mushkin
Gigabyte Super OC GTX 470
1TB Samsung F3
Corsair TX 650

Which should hopefully be quite a good upgrade from my current rig!

and quids is an accepted currency!

Basically, take as much time as needed to make sure you are getting the most out of a stock clock before you start pushing it.
