Yeah, I wasn't serious. I have heard, though, that putting it in a freezer will make it work one more time, in the event that there was something that needed to be retrieved, but that you could count on it not working after.

Haven't tried that myself, though.

WOAH!! if only women worked like that!!

Best bet is to RMA it. Don't open it. Don't smack it up any more. Just go to the manufacturers website and see if you still make the cutoff date for an RMA. Don't do anything to the external feature that will look like you tried to fix it. Let us know in a couple of weeks when you get your new drive. Then we can all cheer for you.

Yeah, give it a show and try RMA-ing it, can only get a yes or a no response.

It's very lucky, or rather clever on your part, that all the info was backed up, something I really need to do myself.

I dropped a 320GB Hard Drive from my desk onto laminate flooring and it did the same thing a few years ago, was my Step-Dad's with all family photo's on it, I was getting rid of a PITA Virus on it, then it slipped outta my hand when unplugging from my PC.

A mate of mine said that you can get lucky with Maxtor/Seagate's and tap it gently with a hammer on the side to knock it back in position, making it work for just long enough to retrieve information before it dying. Worked luckily.

Otherwise a similar thing happened with my brothers External HDD; most likely the arm/spindle broke. But it seems like you have a lot of good suggestions - my brother took it back to the store and they replaced it.

Do you really feel an RMA is fair? You broke it, why should Seagate (and all their other customers) pay for your mistake?

RMAs like this just put prices up for everyone, as they have to pay for the replacement drives somehow. Learn to take responsibility for your actions. Not everything has to be someone else's problem.

Agreed. It's dishonest.

+1 Rep for the first person with morals to post in the thread.

It is rated to survive a 300 something G shock. If it broke at a lower value than this, it's perfectly reasonable to expect an RMA.

It's not like he threw it at a brick wall, it just fell.
